Note this is just a conversation starter

But I've been seeing many people in the southeast
Claim that all the gold is out west

And at the same time I've seen people from colorado, California, and Idaho
Say the southeast is where it is

So what im trying to say is, what?

If you live in the midwest yes i understand you saying
The gold is elsewhere but if your state is historically known
To have decent deposits there is no excuse to say you need
A plane ticket to find gold
But then again i am new, and i can understand it being cool to mine somewhere new

well im familiar with it but not the specifics(cant you dredge on a claim or private land)
but Georgia is no California or Alaska(maybe even Arizona)
but I think the southeast is on par with Colorado, Oregon, or Utah(and many other western states). Correct?

Take your 1-2 flakes per pan and learn how to clear a pan in two minutes or less. That's about 40 pans an hours with digging. 4 hours of panning X 40 pans =160 pans X 2 flakes is 320 flakes. You can be happy with. The rest is just geology and the only geology you really need to be concerned about is the geology that you are working. Good luck and get to it.

I can clear a pan in that time, but I find that with me panning for even 45 minutes becomes boring for me and takes away from having fun mining and I know I can expect more than 2 flakes a pan. its within walking distance of my house so ill mine it if I can get elsewhere but otherwise i'm on the hunt for another spot. also 1-2 flakes a pan was kind of an overshoot, its really 1-3 flakes a pan

sorry typo I meant 0-2 flakes a pan

That's alright my math was off it's 20 pans an hour. If it's not exciting enough do what the CT guy did awhile back and go around on gold panning trips. He got a nice collection of takes from different states. Good Luck

Kiddo, that's the thrill of prospecting vs. mining. When you're prospecting
you're traveling new country and it's exciting to track down new gold. As
someone else said, we've all got places we can find gold, but you're always
looking for that spot with more gold. Mining can be just plain old hard
work much of the time, and while the clean up's hopefully make it all worth
while, it's finding the gold that brings the big thrill for most of us.

Don't know if you've ever read this before, but Robert Service said it best.
As you read this, take your time and consider what the man is saying, 'cause
it's that same thing that drives most of us on to that next spot, or "just over
that next hill".

The Spell of the Yukon
By Robert W. Service

I wanted the gold, and I sought it;
I scrabbled and mucked like a slave.
Was it famine or scurvy—I fought it;
I hurled my youth into a grave.
I wanted the gold, and I got it—
Came out with a fortune last fall,—
Yet somehow life’s not what I thought it,
And somehow the gold isn’t all.

No! There’s the land. (Have you seen it?)
It’s the cussedest land that I know,
From the big, dizzy mountains that screen it
To the deep, deathlike valleys below.
Some say God was tired when He made it;
Some say it’s a fine land to shun;
Maybe; but there’s some as would trade it
For no land on earth—and I’m one.

You come to get rich (damned good reason);
You feel like an exile at first;
You hate it like hell for a season,
And then you are worse than the worst.
It grips you like some kinds of sinning;
It twists you from foe to a friend;
It seems it’s been since the beginning;
It seems it will be to the end.

I’ve stood in some mighty-mouthed hollow
That’s plumb-full of hush to the brim;
I’ve watched the big, husky sun wallow
In crimson and gold, and grow dim,
Till the moon set the pearly peaks gleaming,
And the stars tumbled out, neck and crop;
And I’ve thought that I surely was dreaming,
With the peace o’ the world piled on top.

The summer—no sweeter was ever;
The sunshiny woods all athrill;
The grayling aleap in the river,
The bighorn asleep on the hill.
The strong life that never knows harness;
The wilds where the caribou call;
The freshness, the freedom, the farness—
O God! how I’m stuck on it all.

The winter! the brightness that blinds you,
The white land locked tight as a drum,
The cold fear that follows and finds you,
The silence that bludgeons you dumb.
The snows that are older than history,
The woods where the weird shadows slant;
The stillness, the moonlight, the mystery,
I’ve bade ’em good-by—but I can’t.

There’s a land where the mountains are nameless,
And the rivers all run God knows where;
There are lives that are erring and aimless,
And deaths that just hang by a hair;
There are hardships that nobody reckons;
There are valleys unpeopled and still;
There’s a land—oh, it beckons and beckons,
And I want to go back—and I will.

They’re making my money diminish;
I’m sick of the taste of champagne.
Thank God! when I’m skinned to a finish
I’ll pike to the Yukon again.
I’ll fight—and you bet it’s no sham-fight;
It’s hell!—but I’ve been there before;
And it’s better than this by a damsite—
So me for the Yukon once more.

There’s gold, and it’s haunting and haunting;
It’s luring me on as of old;
Yet it isn’t the gold that I’m wanting
So much as just finding the gold.
It’s the great, big, broad land ’way up yonder,
It’s the forests where silence has lease;
It’s the beauty that thrills me with wonder,
It’s the stillness that fills me with peace.

No you can not dredge on your property or claim....well, you can but, stand he chance of a citation...two are in the courts right now.So, not very many. Property rights and mining law have been side stepped but, smart fellas are standing up it is the only way to preserve it. I was at the fair yesterday and had a great conversation with Mike Rennalli. he is running for District 4 supervisor. Pro Mining,pro gun rights, he backs our sheriff who streamlined concealed carry permits so citizens can protect themselves. The also has stood up to the forest service as they have been walking all over people. We have to make sure that we vote in the right people to represent our way of life. I lived in the south for two years . I found a huge difference in the way people understand the freedoms and rights we out west have, that were lost early on back east. So much open space and areas to utilize with natural resources. Used to be that the drive to produce and work for yourself was a virtue...enabled by the government. Now we have to pay for so many administrators that they want fees for everything. For every one ranger there are 25 desk jockeys it is a system that can not maintain itself. Every thing back east is private or part of a state forest system that is totally different and mining was on the back burner as an industry while it is still a major one out here even today, contrary to some opinions expressed on these forums. It creates a very different perspective depending on where you live.It is very important to fight to keep control in the industry and private sector. Or we run the risk of it just becoming a state run industry...or even worse it will be easier for foreign outfits do use our resources when we can not. If you want to call yourself a miner you need to look way deeper than bedrock and those couple flakes in your pan. ( disclaimer to moderators this is not a political post merely an observation of current situation)

im new so not much, i have a spot with 1-2 flakes a pan but i can only pan it because of bad waterflow

but many people find lots
doc did 3 grams in an hour with a 5 in dredge in one of his videos

That's great to hear you have a spot nearby. A couple dozen flakes a day panning ain't bad. How big are these "flakes"? That could add up.

OK Kiddo, here's some math; Five inch dredge ($$$$$) divided by 3 ($$$) grams of gold/hr. Don't forget to deduct some for gas for the dredge. Oh and we'll assume he needs a truck and/or a trailer as well as all of the costs involved (purchase, insure, maintain, gas...) Lodging etc... is just one of the other costs to worry about. (hint; somewhere north of 100 hours)

Oh and 3 grams an hour for a video may or may not be 1)typical, 2)true 3)ongoing (remember the gold you get today won't be there tomorrow). I'll assume the Doc you are speaking of is one of the advertisers here. Do you see why the math would work out better for him? No offense to any businessman here or elsewhere but understand these are marketing tools. Tnet's advertisers are great and offer quality products but they are in business to make money. It is their JOB to entice you to desire their products.

My point in all of this rambling is not to discourage you. Just the opposite. I encourage you to do it. If you can get even a few flakes a day local, and do it faithfully every week or once a month, whatever your schedule allows, you're on the right track. This way you'll get to know your area, find ways that work for those conditions etc...

well I appreciate the advice
and I got that a five inch is very unrealistic but im not happy with 2 flakes a pan
if im just gunna work the same spot might as well call it boring repetitive work instead of prospecting, and ive found the area im working isn't really the best, its a long distance from any gold belt
heres a little map look at the border between forsyth and Gwinnett county where there are no veins and that's where im working
gold deposits in georgia - Bing Images
and in defense of doc it was essentially raw foot age heres the video I got it from (it was an informational video)

Can you dam up where the bad water flow is to increase the streams volume through a sluice?

the waters too deep so a dam is impossible and its in the Chattahoochee river (kind of difficult to dam up)

There doesn't have to be veins for it to be good gold country. Sucks though for sure.
