I'm planning a trip to the E Fork (San Gabriel) soon. Ive been up there a handful of times without much luck. Usually we park and walk past Heaton Flats. Last trip we went about a mile upstream, worked for the day and got the same couple dollars worth I get 10 mins from home. Its hard to justify the hour drive if we end up with the same amount of gold.

Does anyone have tips to find better gold up there? I don't think going farther is the answer for me as this will be a day trip. I would rather dig more than hike more. 1.5 or 2 miles from the parking area is probably the limit. I've heard some people do well down near Cattle Cyn bridge. I see some pretty extensive diggins' down from there. I just want to be sure I'm looking in the right direction.

Any particular signs to keep an eye out for. Obviously I watch for bedrock, black sand, lead and heavy material but any other pointers would help. I really would like to add some weight to the bottle???
