It's been a couple years since I've done any prospecting.... Kens death, my
old friend and prospecting partner, really put me off for a while. Just didn't
have much drive to get out there and do the work needed to put gold in
the pan.

Time is said to be a great healer..and this is indeed true. I missed being out
on the creeks and rivers hunting for that elusive speck of color in my pan, and
knew the only cure was to get back out there, meet some new folks and
continue the quest so many of us have been on for a lifetime. For me, that
journey is not so much about the gold, but the people I meet along the
way. This is a good thing, as I suck at prospecting! New friends, new places..
....best medicine there is.

Got to know Jeff (95531) here on the forums, and we chatted a bit via
PM about me making a trip down to N. Cal. after the summer temps
dropped down to livable levels. He made an invite, and I readily accepted.

On this same trip I had hoped to venture down to the Redding area and
do some nugget shooting with Neo Tokyo, Ray (Trinityau) and others,
but was unable to find someone who could help my wife while I was
gone...there's just too many things she can't do on her own. While it
did work out in the end that I was able to stay at Jeff's a few days longer,
I'd had to cancel plans for the Redding trip as it wasn't til the last minute
that a neighbor offered her help.

Left home about 10:30am on the 13th for the 600 mile run down to Jeff's
place near Crescent City, Ca. Easy drive really, except for the last 80 miles
running down Hwy. 199 from Grants Pass to the coast. There actually are
a couple of straight stretches on this road...otherwise it's a snakey run
through canyons with little room for error. As I was driving I got to thinking
about how I used to run this same road twice a month in a Freightliner pulling
a loaded 48' flatbed....hard to imagine I never got myself (or anyone else) killed,
but then driving is one of those things I've always been good at. I wish that
same skill had applied to my prospecting!

Arrived at Jeff's place right at 10pm, and after meeting Jeff and his wife Karen,
I unloaded the truck and set it up for camping. Jeff got a fire going in the
pit, and we settled down to chat for awhile (OK, 3 hrs.:laughing7:) before hitting the
sack with dreams of the paydirt to be found the next day.

After copious amounts of coffee Wed. morning, Jeff and I headed
out to the river so I could get a first look at the area. He's been
working an area of the Smith River, and on first glance I felt like
I was in gold heaven...there was more exposed bedrock than I'd
ever seen...:occasion14:

Jeff picked this spot as he knew I would have trouble getting into,
around, and out of other areas, and I was honestly thankful. I was
surprised as I actually did pretty good getting around on the boulder
covered ground, although there were a couple times I chose to bear
crawl over the boulders rather than try and walk on them.

Here's a look at one area of bedrock:

Fall 2015 Trip-10-16-14204.jpg

We both picked out likely spots, and went to work getting some material
together. I started working on a large boulder with a chunk of what looked
like prehistoric moss growing from it, and then I followed the root mass
down into the boulder, busting off chunks of the boulder in the process.

The anticipation was thick as we panned down our material later
that evening, but it didn't last long as neither of us had much
to show for our efforts. I had a couple of 30 mesh sized flakes
and some flea poop, and Jeff had about the same.

I truly expected much more from the material we worked, and
where it came from, but then, that's why we prospect..:icon_thumleft:

The campfire burned late that night as Jeff and I shared stories
of days long past, and it was amazing to me how many of the
same roads [often the wrong ones] that we'd both traveled in life.
Sometimes we feel like we're the only ones to ever experience
the things we have...well, that's not always so, and it's also not
such a bad thing.

Hey Mike. Glad you had a good time and I'm happy to have found a life long friend. Not to metion someone to help me celebrate my birthday properly. Karen and I welcome you here anytime. I had hoped to put us on some golden ground but I'm still a newbie so just finding it at all is good. Since you left, I did manage to get to two new spots before the rainy season began (today). One had fines (ground up slivers) and the next one needs to be worked as weather allows. The second one is remote but does have camping areas. Who knows, maybe next year we can set up our own little bash for the "true" Northern Kalif. :occasion14:

Slept in a bit late on Thursday morning...and knew right off that
that it wasn't going to be one of my best days (health wise). The
drive on Tues, the rock hopping (and crawling..lol) on Wed. had
somehow pissed off the Meniere's gods, so today was not a
good one to be out on the river.

I'm kinda used to this crap, and Jeff kindly took it all in stride. My
attitude was good....so, we still made the best of the day.

It had been nearly 15 years since I'd been in Crescent City, and then
it was only to haul out loads of 14'x8' particle board from a mill there
and take it to Colorado Springs for use in manufactured homes. Jeff
took me on a drive around Crescent City, showed me where Pelican
Bay prison was, and then we drove over to a view point where I'd have
a chance to take out the Nikon and get some Pacific Ocean pics.

Growing up So. Cal. I had spent plenty of time at the beaches, but
now, listening to the waves rolling in, I never realized how much I missed
the sounds of the ocean. About as peaceful as it gets.

After this we hit up a local supermarket and loaded up on groceries,
then headed back to Jeff's place. Karen whipped us up a huge feed
of Mexican food, and we stuffed ourselves while watching a video
about two of my favorite drag racers of all time...Don Prudhomme
and Tom McEwen. Balance of the evening we sat around the fire
pit, sharing a few more of life's stories and simply enjoying the
night.

Hadn't found much gold yet, but it don't get much better than
hanging out with new friends and simply enjoying life as it comes.

Friday morning was a bit cooler, which was nice (for me) as
the nights had been far warmer than I'd planned for. Unsure
of what the weather would be like, I packed for typical NW fall
weather....and everything was too warm, including my sleeping
bag..:angry2:

Jeff and I took care of a couple chores, and then headed back
to the river for another round of prospecting. Just down from
where we were working on Wed. was a gorgeous inside bend,
and it was loaded with golf ball to basketball sized rocks..just
perfect for catching any gold washing downriver during high
water events.

Fall 2015 Crescent City 009.jpg

Fall 2015 Crescent City 011.jpg

We picked out several spots to prospect, and then went to work
digging, moving rocks and classifying the material. Over the period
of a couple hours we checked no less than 6 spots on that bar, and
any one of them should have held some gold...not so much as
a flea poop..:BangHead:

We both sat there scratching our heads for awhile :icon_scratch:......I'm
positive there is gold to be found there...we just hadn't found it yet.

Jeff pulled out his newly built, custom shrimp suckin' gun with the
lengthy barrel extension, and picked a good spot by a large boulder.
Didn't take but a few pulls on the handle and he had a nice pan full of
material to run:

Fall 2015 Crescent City 014.jpg

Fall 2015 Crescent City 015.jpg

I think he found a couple #100- pieces when he panned out, but certainly
nothing to get excited over.

Now, just to clarify, I am sure that Jeff has many more good spots that
he prospects, however he picked this bar for us to work as it was closer
to where we park the car, and he knew I would have issues accessing
other spots. That said, this was also a very "goldy" looking area, and
I was quite happy with being able to prospect it. There is nothing like
this anywhere near my house.

We gathered up some material to run in his sluice at home, and then
headed back to camp. After a couple of massive cheeseburgers washed
down with an assortment of libations, Jeff set his sluice system up
and ran the material he'd brought back.

His set-up is unique, but performs very well. I'd love to have a system
like this set up in my shop!

After running his material, we both panned down what we'd brought
back. I got a few small flakes in the 60 mesh range, and he did about
the same. Gold, yes, but certainly nothing to write home about.

It's true we weren't finding much gold, but I was having a great time
nonetheless. We're all different, and for me the "gold" in life is the
people I get to meet along the way, and a few become good friends.

Supposed to rain on Sat., but then Sunday is supposed to be dry...

.....we ain't done yet...:occasion14:

And I noticed that there were not any more pictures after he took those of you Grasshopper. Mikes camera was spotted picketing his place in Washington with a sign that said something to the effect of "Cruel and unusual work conditions" and something about wanting $15 per hour as a minimum wage.....
