So my brother was gracious enough to use his air miles to pay for a trip me, my dad, and himself to go on a fishing trip on the Kenai Penninsula. I'll be damned if I am going to set foot on Alaskan soil and not put some dirt in a pan and get some Alaska gold (Notice I didn't say try:laughing7:). We will be staying in Cooper's Landing. So I am reaching out to all my TN friends asking for information on Public Areas to prospect near there. Or, if anyone has a claim in the area they might permit me to prospect. Looking forward to hearing some responses.

Thanks,
Mike

It's less than two weeks away now.

I have a question that may be better suited for metal detecting section but I wanted to try here first. I want to take my metal detector but not sure what is allowed and not allowed. I have done some research and this is my plan based on other information. I will carry the electronics on board with me and pack my shaft, scoop, and pick in my checked luggage. Does this sound about right? Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

By the way, we plan on prospecting Quartz Creek which is near the lodge we are staying at.

Be prepared to get pulled ot of line to get the gun powder residue swabbing! When they see a box with wires they get REAL envious! It happened to me back in 2000 when I flew to Alaska! These guys DONT fool around!

I would check the control box and coil. bringing a box full of wires through security doesn't sound fun. You are going to see more gun cases in line athr the Anchorage airport than you could imagine it's pretty cool. Gun cases, fishing pole cases and Ice chests full of yummmy!

I would hate to check the whole metal detector only to find that they confiscated it or someone stole it upon arrival to my destination. As far as the ice chests full of yummy, I'm not sure we are keeping anything other than for dinner each night. My brother is heading up this op so I'll have to see what his plans are.

I should head up to Seward to see if my uncle left any unclaimed property up there after he died. Who knows, I might be rightful heir to a claim.

Didn't get any gold on the trip but the trip was golden itself. I got my first trophy rainbow trout. Here are some pics. Enjoy!

Nice Grayling and Dolly Varden. I used to hike into a horseshoe lake outside of Denali and catch Grayling for hours and hours. They had zero fishing pressure and would hit every cast. Those big long dorsal fins breaking the surface everywhere. Two years later I hit the lake for the first time, total glass, dead Beaver also. Two (that I saw) giant river otters had moved in and cleaned the place out. I've always wondered if it ever repopulated.

I miss fishing for all those different trout. Glad you had such a great time Mike.
