"Limonite" is rust it's what the pyrite turns into.

from mindat.org
Limonite: Limonite mineral information and data.

"A very common material in the oxidized zones of iron-bearing deposits, it is produced by the decomposition of many iron minerals, particularly pyrite, with water being retained in varying amounts."

Limonite-FeO(OH) · nH2O

chalcopyrite->Bornite-Cu5FeS4

pyrite-FeS2->Limonite-FeO(OH) · nH2O

FeS2 + H2O + H2O -> FeO(OH) · nH2O + H2S
and/or
FeS2 + H2O + H2O + O2 -> FeO(OH) · nH2O + SO2 + H

I'm just saying your deposits are different then the deposits in my area...and no I havnt done a streak test on this specific piece as I've already tested these crystals when I first filed my claim and started finding them. That coupled with the fact that I know the geology of our area confirms that it is pyrite....hence why I called it a pyrite coin.
I'm sorry this has turned into an identification thread as I already have it identified...I was just trying to make a little joke and share an interesting specimin.

I'm not going to destroy the coin to prove anything...however I will show you using an identical pyrite crystal..
..that the coin is made of hardness right around 6 as it should be.for comparison a piece of hematite from our creek as well. I cracked the crystal as a streak of oxidization will give false indication. Greenish black...hey imagine that.
Seems to much time in the sun might be making you come off as a little rude Cap'n....don't worry I won't comment on any of your threads anymore. I don't want to garner anymore of your retaliation. I guess you think I jacked your other thread and are just giving me a lesson.
Your not the only real prospector here. I know how to test basic minerals and a little more than that...thanks for your help.

I was referring to your overall attitude..I understand you don't recognize it.
Like I said I already had a solid I.D.
You pushing me about it was rude.

lol... see my previous post ^^^^^

Correct ....but you can't Call the crystals decomposed. ..or approaching it. The oxidized layer of this crystals is minimal and not limonite.
Limonite is softer and has a different color streak...thanks for the input and not being rude about it.
Like I said several times....I already KNOW it's Pyrite.

And these crystals are coming out of slate and quartz. Very close to where we find them in the water. It hasn't moved far or oxidized all that much...and is not a result of decomposition or secondary enrichment....
Unlike the ore I showed crushed.

Our claim has Mariposa slates...some intrusion of the contact metamorphic rock...and diabase intrusions.
