Almost all diggers around germany ,switzerland france ,austria and italy are more or less mining gold that originates from the alps and was transported with glaciers or by classical river -transport downhill.
The rhineriver originates in switzerland,in the state of graubünden.Thats also the place where the source for the rhinegold is and several big nuggies where found in the past. However it,s heavily regulated there with only hands and pans or some rivers (or stretches of rivers which actually are the best i,ve heard)with total ban.
The rhine then goes all the way thru switzerland and then enters germany.
Once in germany the gold is less then flypoop(300000 pieces for a gram i,ve read somewhere) but really pure.
Todays biggest gravel -cement producer of the world (holcim) still mines the gold out of the gravels (in the old riverchannel)via floatation and then stamps ducats which are sold to higher prices as the gold alone would be worth.Good marketing.
Besides that the above(By terry) mentioned coins shure have a bit more history to them.
