Hopefully, he's in a world of deep doo-doo with his parents.
I applaud the effort, but stealing a car (even your parents)
is bad juju.
Had a local kid that started out the same way...he even taught
himself how to fly a small plane by learning on the internet. He
was commonly known as "The Barefoot Bandit".
Kid was on-the-lam for a couple years, but I think they finally caught
him in Bermuda after stealing somebody's yacht..

Pretty damn lucky the car didn't break down, inhospitable country around Broken hill (read desert country) and most likely wouldn't have been found for days (if ever) if he left the car to walk for help.
