Depends on how much and what purity you need Mike.

Up to 1 pound of Mercury can be shipped without a permit. There are several companies that will ship you Mercury of less than a pound. Scientific supply houses always have some on hand but the price can be pretty steep. Unfortunately a pound of Mercury really isn't very much. Mercury is heavy.

The problem is when you ship over a pound of Mercury the Hazmat routine gets involved and the price of shipping goes through the roof. If you just need a pound for small cleanups just order from where one of the supply houses. Here's one with fairly low prices and free shipping on a pound of Mercury, they also will sell you larger quantities if you are willing to jump through the Hazmat hoops.

Visit your favorite local prospecting suppliers before you go online. A lot of times prospecting stores do have Mercury for sale but don't necessarily advertise that fact to the general public. It's perfectly legal to own and sell Mercury but it's important how it gets used.

If you are keeping your process clean and using and recovering your Mercury efficiently there should be virtually no loss. The days where Mercury could be used in the field as a course collection method on the tail of the sluice are gone. If you are losing Mercury in your process you need to rethink your system. Mercury should only be used under controlled conditions. It's not that dangerous and it's not that hard to work safely with Mercury. The stuff is expensive and will really cut into your profits if you don't conserve.
