"Flash in the pan" is a reference to firing an old style black powder rifle and has NOTHING whatsoever to do with gold or gold panning.

Ah yes that BS when the vent is dirty or somthing and the main charge fails to ignite on your flintlock, the primer powder in the pan flashes off with a "poof" and the deer goes bounding through the woods.

But we can agree that "flash in the pan" has nothing to do with gold prospecting and is typically not a good thing? lol Lots of fun when you're pan flashes off but its a hang fire and it goes off while your reaming the vent and it scares the cream out of you.
