Been raining solid the past four days, and what is typically a beautiful
Northwest river running through my backyard is now beginning to look
extremely...angry.

They say dredges cause damage...horsehockey. They need to come
on over and have a look at a river with 100+ ft. long logs as big around
as a pickup truck barreling down it at flank speed, all the while shredding
the bottom with the remaining branches. There's at least one of these
monsters (per minute) flowing past the backyard right now.

Last time it got this high was in '03, and we lost a foot of of ground across
the entire backyard.

That red line is flood level.

USGS.12194000.151438.00065..20171116.20171123..0..jpg

We sit high enough up the bank that we're safe til it hit's around 50',
and that's a long ways from where it is now. Still, quite a few places
both upriver and downriver from us are now under some very cold water.
We're safe, but it's sure ugly to look at.

On the upside, gonna be some fresh flood gold and black sand to check
out once it drops back into shape.

The Sky is flooding too, very interesting flood pattern, have not seen one like this, over the past years the river would go up and down real fast witch stripped the gold. Going Sunday to access the effects of this flood, if there is black sand and garnets visible on the down stream side of the rocks there will be gold too. Don't know about the Sky, but a cold, clear night or two usually
drops the Skagit right back into fishing shape. This time it's
gonna take more than a couple, and these 100,000 cu. ft. sec.
flows will restructure the bottom right along with shredding
all the eggs the salmon just laid.

Be careful walking those sandbars right after the water drops
'cause they can be nothing more than quicksand 'til they get
dried out. Been stuck in it a couple times while out steelhead
fishing, and in 5mil chest waders no less. It ain't no fun trying
to pull yourself out of it.

I know those sand bars well on the Sky but fortunately the gold barring areas are sitting on hard pan or clay, easy digging. Projections for the Sky is it will back to almost normal level by Sunday. I also am hoping this flood may strip some of those sand bars and expose old gold deposits I discovered back in 1996. One rich deposit has at least 6ft of sand on top of it.

Kevin, don't know if you're flying or driving, but if you're
driving make it late next Sept. I'll loan ya some gear, and
you can bring a load of Coho salmon home with ya..

And yes, you can fish and prospect at the same time. :occasion14:

River is back down to 28' this morning with it flowing 62,000
cu. ft. sec., and that is right at flood level. Still raining, but hoping
it continues to drop.

Saw a clip on the news last night of the Skagit and it's moving!!!!! Snow melted here and we're getting what's left over of your rain. Supposed to warm up to 50 tomorrow and I "think?" I'll head up to the claim (if no snow?) and scratch around for a couple???????????????? Glad your property is safe...............

Sounds good. We will visit my family in Issaquah for the Independence Day holiday, then head up your way!

People don't understand that dredging actually helps flood control. Flood insurance is the second largest liability of the the US Government.

Dizzy Digger,
I wonder......we're you thinking of the Creedence Clearwater 1970's song with the same title as when you wrote the title to this thread?
If so, I hope you keep fond memories of those days as do I--and I hope the waters around your home have now subsided.

It's been crazy upriver for sure! I hope you've survived this latest event without too much loss. Others unfortunately have not been very lucky.

100% correct! I still listen to Creedence all the time.. :occasion14:

Rivers dropped back into it's banks, and with it getting cold it'll be
back to normal within just a few days, especially with the snow level
dropping.

Had a nasty rain/wind storm come through this morning, and it
lightened up around noon...just after the power went out. Power
back now (would have been a cold night!) and all is well.
