The first question I would ask is: were those collected from place with a history of producing gold? If the answer is yes, then definitely crush and pan. If the answer is no, I’d still crush and pan, just because it’d be a good fun project and you never know...

Do an almost always reliable visual check....Check the color in full and shaded light. Gold will still have an unmistakable golden color in shaded light. If the color blanks out or changes, it is most likely not gold.

only one way to find out! personally I have had zero luck crushing choice pieces. However I am getting some by crushing my non magnetic concentrates.

If it doesn't beep or zip on the detector I wouldn't mess with it. Some guys might have the ways and means to crush tons of rock, but for the small guy its gotta be higher grade, to be worth the time. Maybe I don't think big enough, but thats my advice.

It will also miss A LOT of visible gold.

Have one use one often However.. they don't have much depth. On "specks"

I have quite a bit of quartz stock piled that yielded visible gold when crushed. And never made a chirp on my Falcon.


"Hunting" with one is extremely slow going.

I've crushed and panned ALOT of leavitrite over the years and never a speck. I need to narrow my searches a little better than carrying all leavitrite back home and crushing the same stuff hehe.
Many times I thought I really had something! Depressing! I thought for sure...!

Since then I've learned the gold ore pretty much looks the opposite of what I guessed, at least around here. I look for the ugly rocks now.

Generally speaking one can research a little about the gold found in the area and then research what type of ore carries the gold. Then if and when you see that typical ore sample, you can further utilize a loop and inspect it for visible gold. Then if you really feel it deserves crushing you can "have at it". But if he asks the question and never checks back, I'll bet he crushed it and found zilch....which answered his own question!
