My obsession with gold panning has now spilled over to everything else and I have a lot of stuff I'd love to be able to gold plate myself. There's a whole bunch of DIY gold plating kits on Ebay for less than $100 that are pretty cheap, has anyone here ever used them or something else? Any tips on being able to DIY this without screwing up? Just how resilient is the gold plating itself, does it scratch or fade away easily if not handled well? Can I just use the raw gold I'm finding in the mountains here for these kits?

For the last question, yes you can use the raw gold for plating. It is essentially reverse electrolysis. I have never tried it but the kits should work just fine.

The piece you are plating has to be perfectly clean.
