There is recoverable placer gold in Cave Creek. Panning even at the old crossing will get you some color. The placer gold has been eroded from the Phoenix and Maricopa hardrock gold mine sites. These mines are not far upstream from the town of Cave Creek.

The problem you are going to have there is that the land is all privately owned so you will need permission from someone that owns mineral rights AND you have to contend with all the people making complaints about someone mucking about in the creek. Despite the history of the town it's one of the least mining friendly towns in Arizona.

There is some gold in the canyon above seven springs a bit further north. You might have a more peaceful experience panning there and it's a nice area to camp in.

Good luck!
