Hi Saabman,

I make maps and use QGIS on a regular basis. It can do all kinds of map feats and it will handle standard map overlays well.
However, there are a few drawbacks.

The learning curve is pretty high. There is so much it can do, and the documentation is scattered at best.
Being Open Source Software....it can be kind of buggy at times. I do a lot of work arounds.
There is lots of data available to use, but you have to sort out the different formats etc.

If you are willing to take the time to learn a few basics, you can do some pretty cool things right off the bat.

If you have a few specific questions, I might be able to point you in the right direction.
