Looks a bit like Iron. Is it magnetic?

    Re: another heavy rock

Not magnetic. I don't want to destroy it... so I guess I will get a dental pick and see if i can pick out some of the silvery stuff. Or get a local rock hounder to look it over.

It could very well be mica..but it looks more dully metallic than any mica I have seen. Sort of like a silver leaf that would be applied to an object for example, to gilt it. Well come to think of it, i guess mica can look that too, hehe. It just looks sort of malleable..but won't be sure till i get a dental pick. And it is heavy.

Anyway appreciate your replies! Thought if it was an lead or silver ore it would pop right out and be knowable. So it probably is not. If i find out it is..I will post!

    Thanks!

    Desertmoons,

Do not crush this sample or subject it to any other invasive treatment. There are many minerals that are quite valuable besides gold or silver, and you may have found such a specimen.

A couple of possibilities come to mind from your photos and heaviness. Take it to the nearest rockhounding club and get it checked with ultraviolet light. scheelite may be possible, very heavy ore of tungsten, fluoresces blue to yellow in ultraviolet light, colour usually yellowish, brownish, or white, hardness 4.5 to 5.0.

The second, perhaps more likely identification... lies with a very heavy lead ore called cerussite; this mineral is frequently glass clear to grey hued; the grey hue is attributable to the inclusion of galena particles...a metallic lustre sulfide of lead. This mineral is also quite soft overall.

That's about all that comes to mind for the present. Good luck and HH.

    Jim.

Time, oh good sweet time...where did you go?
