Have someone at a rock club or university check it out then. I'm out of guesses right now.
And recheck the scratch using magnification. If it left a "metallic line", it wasn't scratched.

Yay! I stumped a rock god! I was going to start with something easy but everyone seems to know sulpher and obsidian when they see it.

Seriously though, thanks for trying. The knife definitely left a scratch, not a metallic line. Hopefully one of these days I'll find out what it is.
Meanwhile I'll continue to pretend its a petrified something cool.

Hi found this in Mt baker Snoqualmie forest in Washington state was hoping someone who can identify it View attachment 1449275

It's a metamorphic rock for sure, folded. Not sure I can ID it better then so from a mere picture without being familiar with the local geology.
We used to make cabochons of similar rocks at school, they were very nice!

Not that hard really. With over 4000 minerals known to man...Well, let's just stick to that I have a bit more to learn!
Post it over at the Rocks/gems section, perhaps one of the chaps has an idea.

Also don't forget to mention the hardness test with the knife and results. Let's see if we can't stump them to.

Can anyone PLEASE tell me what kind of rock/ mineral this is? It's very fragile and the many thin layers it has will come off one by one if not handled carefully. I got this one in Palos Verdes. It's absolutely beautiful. Amazing what the Man upstairs can do.

This post couldn't have come at a better time! I was hiking in southern Canada when i found this rock i thought looked kind of neat. It's been sitting around for a year when a friend just recently said that it looks like kimberlite! Which can contain precious gems i learned. I'm pretty skeptical but i would love to get some feedback by someone who knows what theyre talking about!

Not kimberlite or anything similar. I'd like better pics, the white stuff could be opal. Does it look glassy? opal does.
The alternative is quartz, which has a more greasy look to it.

I found this specimen near a copper mine in the mountains of Peru (Toromocho Mine). I know they have some Molybdenum there as well. Any ideas?
