Volcanic rock i.e. tuff(?), possibly slag if the first doesn't fit.

I'm thinking towards volcanic rock yes, maybe scoria, but I'm intrigued with those cilindrical structures on it, they look like hollow twigs!

Hello! I’ve posted on here before about some strange shaped crystals I found that you said could possibly be Garnet. I decided to climb up one of the mountains on my 20 acre property to see what else I could find. The first day I found this crystal formation that I’m guessing is just quartz. I decided to go back the next day and picked up all of the rocks that had that same outer crust that seems like volcanic rock to me. I ended up finding Garnet in a lot of them I also found some black tourmaline! So my question is if this is just all the pretty junk that’s coming down the mountain do you think I could find something better quality? What book would you recommend so I can learn how to prospect? Thank you for your time! Most of them still look like garnet as a initial thought. Host-rock; granite. Volcanic for sure.:icon_thumleft:
Let a geologist/lapidary club or something related check them out for a positive ID, mind you this service here is but a mere qualified guess.
My gut tells me you might be on to something; there might be potential for topaz - if lucky! (which is why I urge you to get a second opinion in real life)

From the pics, the garnets seem to have decent clarity. Finding gemstone-material (transparent) doesn't seem impossible.

Thank you! I’ll do some more research online to figure out how to find some more crystals! Around the area that I found the garnet and black tourmaline I also found black schist scattered all over the ground along with a huge vein of it. I also found a few purple an pink schist if that’s what it is I still need to buy a test kit. F8AF06B4-362D-4AD8-A8FC-B1928903C06B.jpg F8AF06B4-362D-4AD8-A8FC-B1928903C06B.jpg

Hi there! I found this rock about 25 years ago and for the last 15 years it has been sitting in my fish tank. I always just thought it was something that had hardened with pieces of beer bottle. But recently a friend tried to convince me that its a meteorite because it's so heavy, I told him I don't think that it is. So finally I have decided to find out what it is and looking online for the first time it looks like some other pictures of Magnetite/Chondrodite?? Can you please tell me what it really is? thank you

Fantastic thread!!! Very excited as I was already a member :) i'm assuming this is just a white quartz. What makes it so bizarre is I live in the mountains of western North Carolina and I have nothing but Boulder after Boulder after rock after rock. Some the size of a car. They are all dark colors. This thing stands out from a mile away and I don't know where it came from as it doesn't match anything else in the creek. Anything special about it? I have more pics if needed but I doubt it :) Thanks!!

Ps:Hard to tell but it's the size of a football.

I am not even NEAR being called an expert, but...... the lines tell me maybe sedimentary. Maybe limestone? Get some hydrochloric acid. Limestone is calcium carbonate. It will "fizzle" if a few drops of HCL acid is dropped on it. Be careful ... safety glasses! Check its hardness. May also be marble, the metamorphosed result of limestone. Just a thought. ╦╦Ç

Hello, I found this in southwest Texas 2 years ago and am just about ready to break it to figure out what it is. It's approx 8.5"Ă—6.5"Ă—4.5" high, weighing 17 lbs. It is too dense for sandstone and not granite. Very large agate by chance? The crazy banding made me think of agate and it was found in an area known for agate. View attachment 1548241

PLEASE don't break it! The banding indicates you may have a really nice piece. Consider having it cut in two. If very pretty, you now have TWO nice pieces. Keep both or give one to a friend that collects also. ╦╦Ç

Very nice! Go to Ace Hardware. Get a pack of those brightly colored flags on steel "poles". Plug those into the ground where you find every piece. They may point you at the vein source. Also, take pictures. Pictures may reveal things your eyes did/could not see. Pretty much like a prospector would do. Use Google Earth to get the "bigger picture". ╦╦Ç

Rock Rings..I discovered a sandstone rock (about 3/4 ft wide X 1/2 ft) at the top of the riverbed with several rings.

It was sandstone with several rings. Imagine how the rings in a tree stump appear.

The outmost ring was about the size of a grapefruit. The rings appeared a darker brown almost rust color.

I will go back and take pictures but meanwhile what are everyone's thoughts?

Hey guys if you have any rocks you want identified,, or are having a problem with the composition, Post it with questions, and a brief summary of where you got it..I'm down to help!

And I love to play Stump the Chump!:coffee2:

Found this rock few years ago in Iowa and I can't figure out what it is. Is very for heavy for its size, slightly magnetic feels very smooth. Only thing I can find online that resembles it is a rock from Arizona and a meteorite from mars. Please let me know if can. I'm sure it's something you guys see everyday.Heres my Pics of mybro IMG_20180301_080114857.jpg
