Here's a rock from a beach in far northern Minnesota. It is dark navy to black and very smooth. It is about a foot long. Hope you can tell me what it is. Thanks for all of these wonderful posts. I love reading your answers.

I found this in a creek bed in Southeast iowa. I've done some research and think it's some type of magnitite because the center of the black vein is attracted to a magnet. I'm not 100 percent sure and the topic is new to me. Please help. Thank you

Alexandrite ~ the very name of this gemstone brings to mind images of royalty! ... or lovely magenta highlights will be evident by the light of a candle or flashlight,

Hello!
I'm hoping someone can help identify this rock. It is magnetic and very sparkly which is not shown well in the pictures. Any assistance would be appreciated!

Thank you

Hallo, I would really appreciate any information you can give me to identify this rock. It has an amazing pattern which intrigues me a lot. Picked it up in Sputh Africa in the North West region. Absolutely stunning! Thanks

Sorry all. The above post from Sk8ermadre was to ask if anyone thinks these rocks might be worth breaking up. What type of rock maybe? @Gnosis78, gorgeous rocks!

I would love your help! I found this large rock while digging in my yard in Georgia. I broke a corner off to get a better look inside. The small piece pictured weighs 7 oz. and the larger one weighs 10 lbs. It is very unusual for this area, as far as I know. Thanks for taking a look.

Gnosis,
Chalcedony? (agate or jasper?)

sk8er,
Quartz. If you see something metallic looking, give the crushing a shot. "rust" is another good indicator.

HappyL,
Looks like perhaps chert?

Yellow with dark circles

I found this a while back and recently came across it again. I have decided I really want to know what it is. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? Two of the pictures are in regular indoor lighting and two are of my flashlight lighting it up.

To Sheldon
I rubbed it with my finger and even rubbed it on my pants until it warmed up a good bit, but no smell.
