Hi there everyone. I just created this account and probably have enough rocks to keep an amateur or professional geologist busy for a long time but to the point. I found this rock near a water source in western Oregon. I have rock hounded for several years and come up with plenty of agates, chalcedony, basalt, obsidian, thundereggs, etc, this is different. I have a metal detector that i use on occasion, this was not one of those occasions, i just picked up an interesting rock and thought it felt quite heavy given its size. Took it home and did a magnet test and looked at it under a 10x-lens and honestly cant figure it out. It has been suggested that it may be a meteorite. I have compared it to magnetite, hematite, meghemite, and just about every type of ore and still cant match it. Its flat on one side and bullet shaped on the other. any help? 20170117_193111.jpg 20170117_193122(1).jpg 20170117_172211.jpg 20170117_172150.jpg

You said you did a magnet test but didn't say how it turned out....magnetic or not? Did you polish it (last picture is nothing like the other three)? Did you do a streak test? Check this page out since it may help you determine if it is a meteorite or not. https://www.google.com/webhp?source...&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=scratch+test+for+meteorite.

Good luck.

It is magnetic, but not strongly magnetic. the string test worked with a smaller magnet. i did polish the underside with steel wool, however the polish sheen wears off and it goes back to being the flat tone. Im considering cutting a window into it or having a geologist test it. i have not done a streak test either.

I got a rock! I found it a couple years ago with my metal detector. Its unimpressive, the only reason it stood out is because my detector found it and there are no rocks on the property.

I cut it to see what was inside.. any ideas?

Iron ore?

A beautiful rock my wife found on the coast

Here is another interesting rock. My wife found it on the coast on a beach that we frequent. We were competing for the biggest agate (secretly, like we always do) and well she took the cake or well the agate or whatever it is. It weighs about 6 - 8 pounds. 16114347_364400250584245_6262585712016411198_n.jpg 16114379_364400283917575_1231114454860160779_n.jpg 16114704_364400240584246_6224869222266703652_n.jpg

Go ahead, do a streak test. Also test if a knife will scratch it.

For simplicity:
An agate will typically have a concentric banding in it as well. You're ought to see if better if you wet the stone.
If it has no banding, it's not an agate, but rather a chalcedony.

I live in the Mid Tennessee region, and found this in my back yard while looking for fossils. I was trying to find out if it is man made, or an actual rock, since I haven't found one like it before. On the side without the strange ridges, there is a whitish horseshoe type shape as well. Any info or ideas would be appreciated! Thanks.

Got some rocks for you to check out for me

I've been doing some research in the back part of my property and a certain area has a hillside with all sorts of what i believe is quartz, but didn't know if it may have some gold prospecting potential clues. Thanks in advance.

I'm thinking granite or something similar.

@EU. I agree with your statement. I probably worded my sentence poorly. I've been finding a lot of Pyrite/Mica in the same area as this Quartz, just didn't know if that would be a good clue or a bad clue for the potential for gold?

Thanks for your response,

Unless theres gold in the waterways downhill of the quartz, which you have to pan to find out, its just hunks of quartz.

I've had quite a few newbies under my wings; the role of thumb I give them as newbies: Examine anything that looks metallic.
Surely it'll take a lot more time then some other methods, I however would like to think it adds to their experience as well.
I try to teach them to not take anything for granted. Mother nature has plenty of tricks.
