Re: UGS wants your old maps!
Well I kinda disagree. As much fun as it has been for me to rummage through old mine shafts, they are insanely dangerous. It's common knowledge how dangerous they are. I think filling some of them in would do some good. We also have a major meth cooking problem here in the west, and these old mines are a prime target for the cooks. These people are absolutely insane and will shoot you if you get close. Someone has to put a stop to it, it's dangerous.

If it was 100 years ago we could shoot the meth makers and leave the mines alone. Knew I was born way too late.

If you know they are dangerous then stay away.
You're probably afraid of your own shadow.

When I was in the military you had 3 rules.
1. Do any thing you want.
2. Make sure there are no witnesses.
3. If there are witnesses see rule #2

A Friend of mine, found an very old mine tunnel! (NM)
He decided to go in !!
He's Really glad that he did !
The tunnel went in for about 100'
Then made a turn to the right
Then, it kind of opened up..
there was a couple of wooden benchs...
They had some very Old Dynamite sitting there on them!
But!
What he found next
Man!
Would you believe it
A Winchester lever action 45/70 ! ,
"Thing" must weight 20 lbs!
I think that you'll have a hard time convincing him, never to go inside one!

Re: UGS wants your old maps!
Many years back forestry service went on a campaign dynamiting old mines closed and also destroying springs in areas that were off the "designated trails" they desired people to stay upon. Subsequently, you were not allowed to travel off the designated trails by machine...
It's a problem.

Re: UGS wants your old maps!
On one of the other forums is several posts regarding a federal law about roads and access across land - be it public or private. There are lawsuits to keep our access rights.
read up on RS2477 then hold on to your old maps! see if some of the lawsuit/ citizen rights groups can use them. Make an effort to traverse any old trails/roads/footpaths/horse tracks/ wagon roads - - - we need a place to document such travel to support our/any claims that the trails are used.

Re: UGS wants your old maps!
If anything they should make them more dangerous, I say fill them with poisonous snakes and spiders and such, now normal people will stay clear and the snakes will take care of the meth cookers. Solves two problems at once...
