This little piece chipped out and brushed up pretty good
except for a little quartz hung over the gold . To risky to
try and chip that little bit off .

Yes , found in Alabama . Whittled down from a piece of vein
rock about the size of a beer can .

Man I wish it was just loose on the ground . Unfortunately it's a little harder to get to than that .

Various vein types in several counties is what this stuff comes from . I think there is better that
I just can't get to ..... and never will as far as I can see .

Very nice peice. I am envious. What do you do to get the gold to pop like that? the few peices I have the gold is tarnished and would like to take a couple of pictures of your quality.

Actually , most of what I find is pretty pure , clean and bright without
much help . Especially inside the rock . Not all of it , but most of it .
I clean every decent piece anyhow just to make it look as good as I
can whether I end up posting a photo of it or not . On a spec piece
it's as much about cleaning the rock around the gold as it is the gold
in order to bring out the best looking result .
I also like to do some chip & tap chisel work on some pieces to try
and front the gold as much as possible and knock off the rock with
no show which I will break down further or crush depending on the
size . I mess one up now and then but it don't bother me much ,, not
like I'm doing it for somebody else or sell value .
I don't use any kind of acids on spec type pieces . I do sometimes
use acids on solid nugget type pieces if I have to . Usually that would
be because of the reddish / brownish iron staining that mostly
comes with saprolite type deposits down here . That kind of staining
can be difficult to assuage totally .
Git'n to long here ............. I just use Palmolive-Oxy dish soap ,
dechlorinated water , and various brushes , especially tooth brushes ,
from stiff to soft . I also use a ball mill occasionally . I haul chosen
rock broke from the vein .
I put it in tubs with dechlorinated water and soap mix and let it soak for
a couple of weeks . I then load some into a tractor bucket and rinse/wash
it with a pressure washer and hose sprayer as I inspect each piece .
I break it down from there accordingly with hammers and chisels ,
inspecting each piece as I go . When I get a few pieces I like I do
a final clean up .......... I mix a tablespoon of Palmolive-Oxy to each
gallon of dechlorinated warm ( 80 to 90 dgrees ) water throw them
in let them soak a few minutes and brush'em up . Then rinse them off
good and put them in a 200 degree oven for 30 minutes .
I do the solid type stuff pretty much the same way ...... soap , water , oven
unless I have to use an acid soak . I like to try straight vinegar first
and move up to HCL if I have to . If I go to HCL I rarely go stronger than
a 2M mix , I also like to keep an acid soak warm , checked and fresh
and if using HCL .... short .
Of course ultimately there is gona be some you just can't get the
" TINT " off of ......... lack in purity is the general cause for such .

thanks for the detailed reply. I have a vein that I am playing with that has gotten alot of rust, and a black dust type material in and a round the peices that I think are gold the rust colors the quartz and the black dust stuff covers the gold and is also in pockets inside the quartz with no gold or other metallic material. Since last week I have put several small peices inside a plastic container with some water and the lustre is more apparent. I will use a tooth brush and see if I can post some picutres in a week.

Freezing my back side off.
My shoulder and neck finally healed up.
Started water detecting and it was great therapy.
Cheap sunglasses and pretty girls helped also.
Ready to start busting rocks again I hope.
