Hello,

I found these pieces on a mountain near central California. The mountain is pretty much uninhabitedand i was wondering if anyone knows what it is? Is it worth getting analyzed at a local lab? Any input would be appreciated.

While fossil hunting we have found similar looking specimens here in Alberta. I found many such specimens in Cretaceous period soil layers. I was told they a form of calcite some of which may have been derived from plant and animal life of the Cretaceous period.

Not sure if that is what you have but might be a start. What other types of rocks were in the area? Any black shales in the area where you found the specimens?
