I think both will serve you well for your proposed uses. The DFX is a computer on a stick with a lot of programming options. Not everyone takes to that. Download both user manuals and look them over.

I am a huge Whites fan, and have never used a DFX.

I did own a CZ7a pro, and it is very deep and great on the beach.

It is a little heavy, but it id turn on and go.

I regret selling it.

dfx hands down.great all around machine and will do more than you expect.the more you learn it,which isnt very hard,the more youll be amazed at what it finds for you.just my opinion,my dfx i wouldnt part with.

Me too, 2 hours after selling my CZ I regretted it big time. So I went out and bought a safari to replace it.

clv, how do you like the Safari?

My son has a Xterra 705, I was wondering if he would enjoy an upgrade...

Cz's still the deepest,easiest to use machine made.It does not take 6-12 months to learn.
No programs and doesn't need any.

Once you load a few custom programs into the DFX you are done. Only change the pre-amp gain and sensitivity and that's all the tinkering needed. The DFX will work in all soils including wet sand, and its faster than the Fisher. Keep in mind though the DFX is chattery around EMI and good for 11" max.
