Pirate bookend

My husband came across this at an antique shop... It was labeled "cast iron bookend" but there was only 1. I'm not sure what it was melted down from but if you look at it with a magnifying glass, there are a lot of weird little designs in it -- like a story or picture or something-- but it had to be looked at in just the right angle under the light. Interesting little doodad anyway, just wondering if anyone had any info on it.
