1800's Silver Napkin Ring - Donated to Historical Society

The other day I was at the park where I have been finding deep old coins, the land use to be part of the house next door which was built in 1727. The House is part of the historical society and the caretake told me about a spot I should try in the field as it hadn't been tampered by any modifications to the property (IE parking lot, land fill , etc).
Thursday I did a short hunt as the mosquitoes were bad, and found this lovely old silver napkin ring. Its about 2" x2.5" diameter, 3/4" wide, and I inspected it, but no silver markings, but It has initials of C F K. The initials matched the name of owner who bought the house in 1773 and the family & family descendants lived there well into the Late 1800s.
So, I called the president of the Historical Society and met up with her today. She was really excited about this, and the napkin ring from 1830-1850, and we were able to match up the initials to a family member, which is really cool. They are going to have a big exhibit in October, in which the napkin ring will also be part of. I had told her of some of the colonial buttons I founds in the adjacent field and she asked if they could borrow them for the exhibit as well, which is OK by me.
As much as I would of loved to keep the napkin ring, as its probably one of my best finds of the year, I know I did the right thing. Its always great to find nice things like this.. hopefully it won't be long before I find another.

The split was probably caused by the ground freezing. Mens rings can split at the bottom, especially if the band is wide but thin.

Way to go catskill. You presented the metal detecting community in the best possible light, you contributed to history, and no doubt in the process you have opened a few doors for yourself for new detecting spots.

Nice find and a job well done by donating it to the Historical Society. :icon_thumright: Now pick the Presidents brain on potential sites to detect, for the Historical Society, its members and old postcards and pictures can be a wealth of info on older sites. Hopefully your goodwill of your donation may open up some more private sites to hunt!!

Not only is she the president of the HS, but also the town historian.. she already told me that if I needed help with some locations and the history to call her and was already given the green light to detect her home which was built in the mid 1800's .

Hello! The Federal and State Governments should see stories like these where responsible Treasure hunters are as interested in History and seeing that valuable artifacts are saved and placed back in the limelight for all to enjoy! If that ground would have been developed, more than likely that Napkin ring would have been lost forever! It is absolutely beautiful and you make us all proud to be in the same hobby :coffee2: Thank you :icon_thumleft: Paul

You surely did the right thing with that napkin holder, kudos to you :headbang: I am sure this may open up other doors for new sites to hunt. Good luck.
