MD Surfer Girl's Car Keys after Beach Rake Buried Them, Sunset Beach, CA

    -
Well, it's been another day, another deed with me lately. The story unfolds like this:

Decided to MD Bolsa Chica State Beach this morning, parked at Sunset Beach, walked a mile into Bolsa Chica at 5AM, started swinging at 5:20, and slowly worked my way back toward Sunset Beach. I was scanning the small dunes behind the homes at Sunset Beach at about 8:30 and this girl came up to me. She said the Beach Rake ran over her car keys while her and her friend were out surfing and asks if I could help her find them. She said on the key chain there were several keys, a car FOB, attach to a long black lanyard.

We walk over to where she thought she left them and you could see about 100 foot strip of sand next to the slope of the beach was all stirred up from her and her friend trying to find them. Other then the area they stirred up looking for the keys, the sand was very smooth from the Beach rake. I made a couple of 300 foot long passes and nothing was found but bottle tops. I told her to flag down the guy driving the Beach Rake and see if there are in the machine.

The guy drove the Beach Rake over to where I was searching and said he was just grading with the machine and did not have the belt running to pick up the trash. So I was thinking the machine must have just buried them. I made three more passes back and forth in the area that she thought she laid them and still nothing. By this time it's almost 9:00 and she was giving up and told me thanks for trying. She was about 100 feet away from me walking off the beach to find her friend who was waiting off the beach after her friend called another friend to pick them up.

As I started to walk away from the sloping beach area while swinging the MD , I saw a 16 oz beer can sticking out of the sand. The beach was really clean so that can stuck out and you can tell the Beach Rake pushed it to the surface. As I walked toward the can I saw about an inch of a black nylon strap next to the can, so I kicked the can out of the way, made a couple swings over the piece of nylon, the bells and whistles went off on the machine, so I grabbed the piece of black strap and it was attached to a bunch of keys and stuff.

The girl was about 250 feet away from me by now, so I yelled out ... I found them!! She was very grateful and offered to pay me. I said no way, but I need a get a photo of you holding the keys. End of Story

That's the second time someone has come up to me in the last couple months stating that they just lost something. The first time was a guy that lost a ring at Huntington Dog Beach and I found that. So I'm two for two!!

Thanks for Looking ... didn't mean to ramble on so much

Being able to find and return any lost item, sure gives you a great feeling.
She will remember that for a long time because someone was kind enough

Same here, Congratulations! I never get tired of doing the same type of finds. I have recovered a Rolex for a guy that was stepping across the dock to his boat and caught the band on something that pulled it off into the drink. He dove for several hours and gave up. I was visiting a friend on another boat a few days later and he related the story to us while we were cooking dinner. I dove in with my Surf Master and located it in about 5 mins. A lost wedding ring for the lady next door when her grand daughter took it outside and lost it in her yard and several other recoveries that were worth more just to see the faces of the people.

    Keep up the great work.
