I had high hopes when I first got out to the beach, there were 2-3 foot cuts in certain spots up and down the beach so I hit the closest one and started in....nuthin.....hit the next...nuthin.....and a repeat ALL along the way. There is just still so much sand on the beach that even with 3 foot cuts it still isn't enough sand pulled off. I guess those cuts are all in that nice clean windblown sand that accumulated at the top of the slope.

High hopes tuned to low expectations at this point but I was there, I had the time and I'd be damned if I wasn't coming home with SOMETHING! I had reached my turn around point and was heading back when a woman with a small baby in her arms asked if I could help them. She had just lost her ring somewhere in the dry sand. I followed her back up to where she her husband and their 3 children were playing. She said she had gotten up, shook the sand off her hand and the ring went flying. It took me all of about 4 swings to find it and when you see it you'll know why she was happy to get it back, it's a beauty! Their names were Dan and Linda from Syracuse NY. Dan is an Army medic getting set to deploy soon so I wished them all the best and told him to stay safe!

I snapped a couple pictures and when I moved down the beach I realized the close up one didn't come out so I moved back down to take another and right in front of where they were standing I started digging a few quarters then the cool little button. It says "RICHARDSON BROOKLYN" and looks like it was gold gilded (you can see some of it remaining). Couldn't find any info on it so if anyone knows I'd like to hear it. The button was very crusty but some olive oil and light picking got the detail out on it. Interesting that they were from NY and so is (possibly) the button!

I was happy at this point with just the button, figured that was my karma pay back but a bit further down I got a weak silver sound on the excal and out pops a cool silver ring with some kind of shell (abalone?) or mineral inlay. Still needs more cleaning but the wife has said she had a necklace that will match it perfectly, guess it's claimed now!

Rest was mostly lightweight junk and a few clad coins, still a great day and I'm glad Linda gets to go home with her ring! Now lets find another one of those eh?

Great story Doc! I'm sure karma will be paying you a visit soon. I found a wallet over the weekend while jogging on my usual wooded trail and was able to return it to the owner within 15 min.

Thanks for the nice comments all! Yeah, it is nice to promote the hobby in a good light, not as the "greedy treasure hunters" that some people expect. Good for future depositor business! Keep em coming back!

It is interesting to talk to all the people from places around the US and the world who come to Va Beach. They are always interested in what you are doing (sometimes TOO much).

Pretty soon I'm gonna have to have the city give me an orange vest that says "Ask Me" and charge an hourly rate to interact with the tourists and clean the beach!
