Last evening we hunted hard, the wife and I and mostly found trash and a little clad. We were about fifty yards from where I had found the first dogtag which we are in process of returning. My wife, Betty, finally found something that was taking her quite a while to get out of the ground. She was excited but being quiet as to not draw attention to her since there were several people in the area. She is always trying to best me and she actually did on this one. I had found one tag and she found the pair, on a small chain attached to a longer chain. The tags belonged to a Scharch Percy W. O 33380184 T42 V.A. Scharch P Tilghman MD. My wife was excited and as soon as we got home, began searching for info on the man. She found some things on him in Tilghman MD and then via Facebook, she found one of his grandsons. So she contacted Bryan, the grandson and told him what we had found. Bryon was super excited in his constant messages as he repeatedly said OMG. Bryon stated that they had practically nothing of his military past but he knew that his grandfather had served under Patton and had been a flamethrower. He also knew that his grandfather was nicknamed "Booker". We continued to receive messages and pictures throughout the night and this morning as he found pics to send us. His grandfather died in 1988 at 67 years of age, Bryan also served in the Army and is disabled. We are sending the tags to Bryan who now lives in Tennessee and he plans to surprise his father with the tags. It was a busy day for us as we detected early and then returned a class ring while also working on this return. My wife is even more excited about metal detecting with this return and a very cool return it is. It isn't often that you get to actually make a connection with the previous owners of something that you find much less receive such an excited response. I had previously found an area loaded with spent old 30-06 brass not far from the tag area. Soldiers were moved via train and there was and is an old train depot less than a mile from this spot, who knows? We are so proud to be able to return the dogtags to the family. Last night, Bryan stated that he had chills running up and down his body at the very thought of getting the tags of his grandfather. Yep, my wife and I are a "Tag Team" as we grow older. Thanks for looking and good luck out there. DL and Betty The one pic is of Percy and his wife Virginia

We are still getting messages from Bryan, he is so excited. Betty is too and can't wait until this evening to get back out. it is so cool to be able to put a face to something you have found.

Bryan promised us pics of them with the tags when they get there. I am finding that some returns leave you with new friends that actually keep in touch with you.

Pvt. Percy W. Scharch was a member of the 313[SUP]th[/SUP] Engineer Combat Battalion. The history of that Battalion is written here by Lt. Col. James H. Green, Commander:
