Yep, garish is in... the ground.

But you dug it, now go melt it!

Looks like a nice chunk of silver.

Cool finds! I remember using those tokens for the bus home from school back in the day. SO much easier than fiddling with change or dealing with the stupid card that had the tendency to rip or fold and become useless.

On October 1, 1947, the Chicago Transit Authority took over all rapid transit and streetcar service in Chicago. That might be the oldest date for your token, though it sure looks newer.

Re: Bus tokens & silver ring

Congrats on that silver ring! I'm glad there was a mint mark on that puppy or you would have had to carry out some science experiments of epic proportions, by the way we were talking in the car anyway. Those bus tokens are sweet... I'll definitely keep my ears open for those 12-35's that are coin size. I thought you had way more wheaties though... you sure you didn't develop a hole in your pouch... ...in the bottom of it.

Who's going to score next??? Loser buys the winner a large Iced Mocha Coffee at McD's!

In 1950, the CTA started selling tokens for use on the surface system, and tokens eventually became accepted on both buses and rapid transit trains. The original tokens said "CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY" on one side, and "SURFACE SYSTEM TOKEN" on the other side. Later tokens said "CHICAGO TRANSIT AUTHORITY" on both sides. Regular fare tokens were silver and slightly smaller than a dime, while reduced fare tokens were made of bronze and approximately the size of a nickel.

Mine are the nickle size bronze version...probably why they came out so clean.

Whoa!
That is one huge ring. Keep your eyes peeled for the guy that lost it. He'll be easy to spot with one finger 3" longer than the others. :laughing9:

Awesome tokens!!

And, one HUGE ring for sure. . . three more of those and you'll have
a "street-legal" set of silver knuckles  Great silver
