    11/1/09 Finds

Got in a little hunting this weekend. Had the opportunity to hunt the yard of the 1850s house where I found the seated dime a few weeks ago. Besides a few wheaties I found an 1867 shield nickel and a 1953D Rosie. Also found a National Association of Retail Druggists medallion at a nearby park along with a few more wheaties.

Great hunt! Does that say 1898 in the blue area? Wow, that's an old nick! How deep was it?

    Great finds, Patrick!!!

"Live and let live" - interesting motto. Skull & crossbones at the top, too.

I'm still looking for my shield nickel....
God bless our veterans! Thank you for your sacrifices!

    Re: 11/1/09 Finds

    Litefire,
It does say 1898 but I am guessing that is the year that they formed the association. I found it in a park back in my home town that dates back to the early 1920s. The area I hunted use to be a football field from the 1920s to the 1950s and they also use to hold carnivals there back in the 1910s. It is next to a creek that floods really bad about once every 5 years so a huge amount of silt has been deposited in this area over the past 90 years. It was 12 inches deep. I also found 3 wheaties that were each 10 to 12 inches deep with one being as recent as 1953. I know there are alot more coins there but they are deep.

CONGRATS ON YOUR FINDS . WERE YOU USING THE 12X15 COIL? YOU MIGHT NEED TO GET A 24" COIL TO GET DOWN DEEPER IN THAT AREA!

    Re: 11/1/09 Finds

I was using the 12 X 15 coil. I had hunted it twice with the stock coil and came up with 1 wheatie that was at 12 inches and barely made a tone that most people would dig. It was an odd weekend regarding depth of coins - 1867 shield nickel at 4 inches in the yard I hunted.....1953 wheatie at 12 inches in the park down the street.

    Excellent Shield

Sometimes there's no rhyme or reason to depth
