What with all the seated coins :o popping up here, I came across this info on modified seated dollars that I thought was interesting. I've learned so many things about coins and other things from T-Net and its members, and this is one of them. I was looking through the classified forum to see if anyone had an Explorer/E-Trac lower rod for sale and came across a post about - ahem - "potty dollars".

Anyway, here's the link to the modified seated half dollar that's for sale. Ivan Salis posted some interesting info on the subject in his reply.

Also, this link has more about them:

You may already know about these, but I didn't before today & thought I'd pass it on for anyone else who didn't.

I remember someone posting a couple hobo nickels a year or so ago. Triggered some infighting over sourcing. I have an IH that is the same size as a nickel, wondered if it wasn't one such coin myself since it's a poor rendering but came up in context with old material.

But I noticed the reeding was actually on the facing edge of the coin I found, maybe a wierd mint error but who knows. A hammered-down coin would still present a reeded edge, I believe.

I'll call that coin a nickel - the surface looks like a cleaned dug nickel.

I'll also call that nickel a real cool find!!!

What does the back look like?

Nah, it's an IH that got enlarged by some process Neil. I was thinking an IH got dropped on a nickel planchet at the mint then shipped out somehow. But who knows?
