Probably my last '09 in '09, but at least it's approved by Victor.

Hey guys. I had to stay local this Saturday (and was too busy Sunday), had a lot of things going on, but I managed to get out for a while with Bill and Mike. We met up at an area where Bill had just dug some nice old silver recently. He was kind enough to let us in on one of his spots, but unfortunately, and oddly enough, no silver appeared at all from that site. I did manage a pair of buffalo nickels (a '36 and a '24) and some cool relics (buckle, etc), but the site was not at all up to our expectations.

We then hopped over to an area we had been to before with varying degrees of success (Bill, overwhelming success, Mike and I, nothing). My first notable find was a 1909-VDB wheat cent in pretty good shape. Seems every wheat I find is beyond repair, but luckily this one is nicer. On that note, I began to swing slower. I hit a trashy area and was able to squeak an 81 VDI at 6 inches. Oh yeah! That usually means only one thing. Dug it up, popped out a '52-D Rosey. I pocketed it, and swung maybe three or four feet tops, and get a 72 VDI at about 5 inches. A 72 is a funny signal. It could be a wheatie, a wine cap, or any one of many various like objects. It is generally low for a penny (75-78) and high for an IH (50-65). But hell, it was 5 inches deep so I dug it. At about 5 inches, I saw a big silver rim. What the? I pulled out from this hole a '46-D Washington. I can't explain it, but it sure pays to dig those signals!

I got a couple more wheaties from this spot ('17, '29), plus a Sacagawyaywyayaya dollar coin (first since '06). Overall, a pretty good hunt in my book. I really hope to get out once or twice again this year, depending on weather. My setup is still on hand; nothing less than deep snow/frozen ground is going to stop me! Arrr

Glad to see you all found some awesome finds! Have a good one, dudes.

    Joe

Wow Joe, really nice hunt there! I've had a couple Georges sound off low like that also. I think its because they may have been on edge, but I always dig those solid unusual numbers that come up,,, mostly just to see what's giving off the rare signal.... sometimes you get rewarded. After digging over 200 I've found a bouncing 69-70 will most always be a modern token.

Pretty sure I know the answer but gotta ask... still got the new coil on?

That coil is nice in the light snow too.. glides over like a saucer. Had my 10" "open center" DD on today and it collected a couple pounds of snow every minute.

    Joe,
Great find. The 09 looks to be in pretty good condition for being in the ground. I guess it will be 10 in '10 soon, but I don't think Victor will approve of that. I hear he comes back in '18, but in a different and more frontal way.

Great VDB Joe! You don't see those very often! I had to buy one for $15 to get mine. Congrats on the silver surprises!
