    Am I crazy!?

This will be my first winter with my metal detector, I really wanted to knock out a couple more hunts for the year. I've found a ton of cool stuff but still determined to find my first silver! I was wondering when you guys stop hunting or when does the ground/other conditions not permit? I have a pretty strong D-handle shovel I'm thinking it won't be too hard, but it sure is cold out there. I wanted to get out tomorrow afternoon, weatherman says a high of 21 for where I live right by O'Hare. Am I crazy!? Any thoughts, suggestions or advice would be great! Thanks!

I usually hunt until the ground is frozen or I can get frost bite in less than 15 minutes of exposure. Which ever comes first. LOL. Welcome to TNET and this crazy group of treasure hunters. TMAN...

    Re: Am I crazy!?

We're all crazy in this lifeboat! Welcome to T-Net!

Some of us hunted through the winter last year, and before last year, I would have thought that was really goofy. I avoid the turf until spring so I don't do any damage and mess it up for everyone.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you find!
God bless our veterans! Thank you for your sacrifices!

Last winter we would go out and chisel through several inch thick frozen ground to get to the good stuff. It takes 10 minutes to dig a whole in ground like that, with a strong shovel, good technique and some hard sole boots! "Who you tryin' to get crazy with ese? Don't you know I'm loco?" - Cypress Hill

    Re: Am I crazy!?

I've been digging where the ground was frozen and we used hatchets to break through the frozen ground. In some cases the relics would be in dirt that was frozen so we would break the dirt into as small a piece as we could and put it in our pouch until it thawed out or we got home whichever came first. It will take ground in an area covered by hardwoods longer to freeze because the leaves help insulate the ground. I've been out, when in the open, you couldn't even break the ground with a shovel but in the woods the ground at worst had a thin crust on it.

    Re: Am I crazy!?

Who knows? Maybe we'll see you this weekend?!?

Sledding hills are always an option in winter. Coins/keys/rings and such suspend in the ice that forms at the bottom, often never reaching the ground. It's always cool to get a signal, brush away the snow and loose ice and see the target sitting there in the ice.

    Re: Am I crazy!?

I ask myself that same question on a daily basis, and invariably, the answer is a firm YES.

Look at my T-Net handle, the name says it all.

Sometimes in the winter, I like to use my Ace 250 in the tot lots. At worst, you're chipping away at something that really cannot be damaged or destroyed. However, mostly you'll find me in the woods during the long, cold, dark winter months, where the ground often isn't as bad as the ground under the turf. If you ever run into a deranged individual in the woods with a straight jacket on, say "Hey, Joe, whatcha finding??"

In all seriousness, good luck, give me a shout out if you wanna hunt somewhere sometime!

    Re: Am I crazy!?

Thanks everyone! Turns out its not as bad as I thought it would be out there. Got a nice shovel and some warm clothes, I do need to take a warm-up break every hour or so when the temperatures are down in the teens or lower, but I've had some good luck at local parks lately. Happy Hunting everyone!

    Re: Am I crazy!?

Oh yeah, by the way, you are crazy.

Now have a seat on the couch and tell us what brings you to this cookie factory.

Were you enamored by pirate movies as child?

Perhaps you collected returnable bottles from the back of some 7-11 and returned them at another 7-11 as a teen?

Well you're here now and the rabbit hole has no bottom!

    Happy diggin'!
