I can tell you I've learned that if the rings are not clearly identifiable, then I just check local lost and founds if I know they were recent losses. Lacking that, I throw 'em in the scrap box where they sit for a year or so until I'm sure I haven't heard from anyone local who might have lost them.

Since most of my nice rings have been wedding bands and engagement rings from local totlots, those without enough script to id will also wait additional time in my heap because I may bump into someone who knows someone, etc., over the course of revisiting the sites.
