Got out a little this weekend
Saturday, old riding spur, some kind of old hatpin (costume, gonna be a chore trying to get that one beat back into shape) and one awesome old toy car, wheels still on it but it needs minor body work and paint. Clad, marbels! etc...
Sunday, another marathon walk in the woods. Mayo and me hit this spot for about an hour, found some eating utensils, pie tins, half a compact, knew it was a family house site now long gone.
After about an hour of this stuff I sat down on a fallen tree to re-imagine the site before it became wasted woods again. Noticed a wire clamp grown into a long-gone branch on the tree, pictured where it would have hung, hit the ground there and got two bent nails, one after the other. Signal didn't change so I hit the hole again and pulled out a handful of dirt and noticed this big shiny in the pile, a '45 Walker! A moment or two later Mayo got a '40's wheatie a couple feet away so that kept us there another empty hour.... Also got an old Bireley bottle. Wonder what that inflation-adjusted deposit is worth now.
Today was more painful, clad and foil, but I did have some fun when I got up from digging a hole and a felt a little more weight on the coil. A snake had slid up on the coil and shaft. He was a real snapper, got me in the fingers a couple times before I tossed him into the creek but his hiss was worse than his bite. Then there's that sweet beer bottle Mayo got! Call it what you will, I will use some profane and vulgar misconstruction of the name on the bottom just for the sake of fun.

Sweet Walker I'll have to pay more attention to those fallen trees the next time
Love the car. . . glad to see the paint on that gas hog survived.

What's the round thing next to the Mason jar lid that looks like a lighter flint dispenser?
Some kind of dial from an old electric meter or device. It's marked 50 Hz and 60 Hz. Don't have anything like it in my lab, wondering what it was from.
Hey, still gathering my marbles. Man I lost them all over town...

Re: Got out a little this weekend
All right Tim!! Nice to see you finding the big silvers. And about that spur- I found one last year, much like yours. I didn't think much of it until Mark identified it, still not sure if I'm really interested in it, must have gotten thrown in the miscellaneous finds box. Any idea of era? I found it in the woods near an old home site where we had found some old coins as well.
So what species of snake coiled up your coil and shaft? Since you threw it into the water, I'm going to guess Eastern garter or Northern watersnake. Close?? I was up north this weekend doing some herping and only managed a Northern redbelly in the way of snakes. I'll scan a pic soon.
Nice hunt,
Joe

Yep Joe, Eastern Garter, cute little fella. Unusually mean though. Figured he was better off in the creek, the kids around there run over them with the bikes and stomp 'em to death when they see 'em.
Can't date that spur, but I'm guessing the late riding era, maybe 1890's to 1910 since it was pretty close to downtown Elgin. Small, maybe a ladies model or kids model.

My last shiny half was the Barber at the July 4th Carnie Cleanup last year. I'd settled in for a half-less season already. Luck o' the swing.

First, Tim, Congrats on big shiny and some other intriguing finds. Second, Bob, I have yet ever to find Big Shiny, but I remember that November day, as I remember it was Lowbatt's big get together.
