Private Yard Hunt Yields some Oldies - 9/12/10

Was in my hometown this past weekend and hunted a yard of a pre-Civil War house that I have hunted before. Found some oldies there last year in the front yard including a1876 seated dime and a shield nickel. Tried the big back yard this time and found a lot in about 4 hours of hunting. Noteworthy U.S. coins for this hunt include 3 IHs (1899, 1901 and 1907), a 1910 V Nickel, a worn 1916S Barber Dime, 1946 Rosie and a 1893Columbian Exposition silver half dollar – my oldest half. There was a small patch where I found several foreign coins that a child must have been playing with outside and lost as they were all with a few feet of each other. They include 2 British Half Pennies – 1939 and 1945, a 1931 Canadian nickel, a 1952 Italian 5 Lire and 2 coins I cannot identify. Also found the following items – Hyde Park, NY charm – home of Franklin Roosevelt, a Paris souvenir watch fob and a 1910 half dollar size souvenir token for the 31st Triennial Enclave for a Knights Templar gathering in Chicago. Based on what I found on the internet it was a very large event. All the items were only 3 to 6 inches deep. I also went back to the bleacher tear-out for an hour and found a 1962D Rosie.

Wow, you sure did have a field day! You found one of my all-time favorite coins, the Columbian Exposition half. It was ther first commemorative coin issued by the US mint, and was originally sold at the Expo for one dollar each. One dollar in 1893 was quite a bit, especially when you're buying fifty cents! What an exceptional yard.
