My First Fatty! 1859 IH -- missed FE by 1 year.
Hi all,
Got out for 2 hours today at my special place. Only 1 keeper, it was my first fatty! Sounded a lot like a pull tab, but not as loud - a solid 12-22 on the E-trac. When I dug I was wondering if I'd get luck and have something other than a pull tab, and I did. Unfortunately, I tried using the sonicator to clean, and it took off a lot of what was left. The date got wiped off pretty bad. The reverse was trash to begin with, but the obverse you could see the indian a little better and the date was supurb. Now in the photo, you can only barely make out the 5 in 1859.
With this, I've gotten 1 or more Indian head from each decade they were minted this year! And it's my oldest US coin on the year, only my French 5 centieme piece is older for this year. I guess it pays to dig those pull tab signals (could be fatty, FE, or $2.50 Gold).

Good job on the oldie! Why is it called a fattie though?

Alright Jon! I was happy to be there when Mark got his, those are great digs for sure!
Hey Jason, they're not really all that fat, we just call them "fatties" because we like to belittle them on account of their age and the way they read as junk or some other low conductor.....

All though lowbatts is correct as usual, they are slightly thicker in the rim than cents made after 1864, and hence fatty. I could have called it a white cent, though after being in the ground so long it is no longer white, or I could call it a cupro-nickel cent, but I like 'fatty' in detector lingo.

Nice job on that fatty Jon
The two I've found are just about like that. . . the "nickel" content in those is the kiss of death.
The best thing to do when you find them is to clean them with a dry brush. . . sparingly.

I wasn't sure you had found an early Indian Head, or if you somehow developed an attraction to the obese and scored yourself a heavyweight heffer. Glad it's a coin!! lol
Nice cent, next, Flying Eagle.
