A Couple December Field Hunts And a Visitor From the North
Hello All,
Southeastern IL Soup Here.
Awhile back in another post I laid out an open invitation for any northerners down this way in need of a hunting spot to contact me.
Thursday I received a message from fellow tnetter Scrounger D looking for a hunt in the area, made a few arrangements an we were off.
The site chosen on Thursday was a cornfield and site of a rather large former homestead.
We hunted for a good two hours and found many targets, and alot of mud the old, arrive with two pound shoes leave with ten pound shoes kinda mud .
It was as I learned Scroungers first ever field hunt, and although we did not make any great recovery's that day,It was still a nice time.Scrounger managed a wheat, and both of us Had several scraps of copper and misc.
below you will find our treasures for that day, followed by the story and pics of the next days hunt
My finds for the day

Scroungers Finds of the day

On the second day (Fri) I chose another field and off we went.
Site Map

Scrounger In the Field

A short while into the hunt I scored my first keeper
1866 2 center

A bit later scrounger scored a big copper
1847 LC

It was sure nice meeting you scrounger, you are a real go-getter,and a really nice fellow.your are welcome to hunt anytime,as for the rest if you ever find yourself down south of I-70 give me a shout....
Enjoy all and HH Soup

Hey Hey,
Great to see those picks. The 2 center looks like it has really good detail, at least by what was exposed. Congrats to both of you on a big copper #1 and big copper #2, I suppose I should use the cent symbol instead of #, but my computer keyboard does not have a cent symbol, that and it's funnier this way. Congrats to both of you and thanks Soupie for the gracious invitation to us northerners.

 Let's go diggin!!!
Re: A Couple December Field Hunts And a Visitor From the North
Awesome couple of coins guys from your second site. Your hand drawn map of the site
paid off out in the open field. By the looks of your digs from site one there should be a
a few goodies lurking close by in the mud.

Re: A Couple December Field Hunts And a Visitor From the North
Scrounger now that I have seen you in action,I believe you would chisel threw a foot of ice to retrieve a target, you are a true hunter bud ..
P2C the 2center was in nice shape, except for the mineralization attached around the area of the 2,someone also attempted to "hole" the coin for a necklace.as far as the invitation,me field is you field....it would have been even funnier this way 1# and 2#
DFW The maps help tremendously,I have one for all of my field sites,It is fun for me to stand there and visualize the past.
The first site has produced 4-5 Indians, several wheat's,nice watch fob and a Eagle "I" button, and the second site has produce several Indians and wheat's,2 LC'S,the 2 center, and an Eagle "I" button as well as several relics...

Looks like a great time guys! Wish we had that bare ground around here for a little longer, but the snow also helps keep the frosting down to a minimum.
Hoping to get out as soon as I see 40's again!
Oh yeah, thanks Jon (p2c), now I'm staring at my belly button wondering just how far I can reach into it, if at all.
