Still no dang seated - a nice two dime day though...

I got out today with Lowbatts and Watercolor. We went for a long walk to the area of an old farmhouse in the general area where we found the "sweet" cache earlier in the week.

    http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.p...,390079.0.html

Nothing worthwhile came up for some time today, then WC found a Rosie, and 'Batts dug a big wheatie spill. I started poking around for a bit and claimed a Rosie for myself - good deal! Lowbatts and I stood around BSing for a few minutes, then started hunting in earnest again. I crossed the path and started swinging not too far from the path itself, and in about 5 or 10 minutes, I got a penny sounding signal that looked like it could be a dime if I swung just the right way. OK, here comes another mem cent or maybe a clad dime....

Well, after finally locating the target in the black mud, I see a reeded edge and think "clad Rosie". I squirted it with water and could see it was silver, so I had another silver Rosie at least.

Well, I need glasses to read, 8) but I don't want to ruin them or lose them, so I keep them in my car which was about a half mile away. So I did the next best thing by squinting and looking at it. I thought that it might be a Barber, so I pulled out my magnifier. What I saw was so shocking to me that I found it hard to believe! I could see it was an 1835 capped bust dime and that it had a lot of detail on it!

I set it back down and started yelling out like a goof for the other guys to come over. I wish I could fully describe how digging this beauty made me feel - I hope it's something each of you get to experience if you haven't already! Now I've dug all kinds of old coins, but never a seated. I'm to the point that I wondered if I'd ever find one. To skip past a seated and get a capped bust in this shape was really amazingly awesome!!! Especially at a site where the silvers and wheats were coming up mid 20th century. While I was digging it, I never would have dreamed it was that old of a coin.

Here's the goods, including some kind of animal tag from the 40's.

So a ho-hum hunt really turned into an unbelievable day!

I don't know if I've ever seen a capped coin in this forum (sorry if i missed any ) Amazing find, I love the detail on it.

Also, maybe its just me, but does it seem to anyone else that older silvers (barbers, seated, and this capped) look darker in color than the newer silvers? I just think I've seen that a few times and I find it odd..

    But anyways, CONGRATS!

Hell ya Neil, if you can't find a Seated, just skip over 'em and go to the next category.
And who really cares about a Seated when you're digging a Bust anyway right?

Looks to be close to, if not AU-50---WOW! Big bucks there...

I think you owe Tim a Frosty.

He picked up the tab on the grub at BWW for sure. Man was that one sweet first to get, especially in that sweet condition!

Wow! Did that clean up nice

When you can find old coinage like that, you don't need any of those "dang" Seated's
BIG congrat's on that superb find

Thank's for lunch at BWW too!

    HOLY SHHHHHUGAR!

    NOW THAT'S TEN CENTS!!!!!!!

It's amazing how crappy today's coinage is compared to almost 200 years ago. That beauty makes the Rosie look pathetic, just look at that detail!

Congrats on such an awexome find Neil!

    I'll fourth the Banner!!

I hope not, Patrick - I hope lots of these show up on the IL forum this year!

Those of you who voted banner on this one, an extra thanks. I know it doesn't have a prayer of making the banner. Kermit & I were jabbering about that via PM. My opinion is that the mods have put the banner out of reach of 99.99% of users and the decision to put finds up there or to not put them there are so arbitrary in many cases I think it's very sad. I've gotten so frustrated in the past with the great finds of others that should make it not having a prayer being up there while finds that are mod-loved go up almost instantly that I set my preferences to not display the banner anymore.

The fun here was being out with friends and finding something really cool. I'm glad they were there so they could share in the excitement. This wouldn't have been nearly as much fun if I were out there on my own and dug it. Thanks guys for making it exciting!

And thank you everyone for all the great comments! I appreciate them for sure, and they are more important to me than making the almighty banner could ever be!

It was fun being the blind pig that found the acorn this time!

I agree with you 100%. Having your friends there to see it makes the difference, everything else is not so important.

I told Dan and Kermit the same thing, hoping they can experience the same feeling I felt when I dug up that dollar.

    Congratulations on a fantastic find.
