I now know what it's like to dig up a gold coin!!!

Well, I met up with Goldinwater and another one of our hunting buddies John, and We were detecting at a somewhat local fairgrounds that has been the county's fairgrounds since the 1850's. Everytime we hunt there we always talk to each other about how many gold coins are probably here. We always kinda blow off the possibility because the fairgrounds has some of the trashiest soil ever! LOL!! you could randomly dig a plug and there will be a couple of rusty nails and a pulltab in the hole! LOL!!! Anyway, I was hunting about 50 feet from John and I was noticing I was keeping an even threshhold and the area was actually pretty darn clean, so I started digging low tones just to see if I could find a war nickel, buffalo, v-nickel, etc. After about 5-10 pulltabs I got a pretty good signal but kind mixed, I dig a plug, flip it and there's a pull tab laying in the bottom of the hole. So I put the plug back and recheck it with my detector, I get a sweet high tone and I'm thinking silver! I flip the plug back and I don't see anything in the hole, I check the plug with my pinpointer and there's nothing in the plug. I run it around the hole and I get a signal from the lower side of the plug, the pinpointer scrapes a bit of dirt away and I see the edge of a coin. I rub some of the dirt off with my finger and I almost passed out! there in the side of the hole was a good sized gold coin!! I could see part of the rim with the reeds and they were beautiful gold!!! I screamed like a little girl for john to come over and I told him to look in the hole, he bends down and says: "you fu##er, you got a gold coin!!" John then screamed like a little girl to Goldinwater(Chris) to come over, Chris looks in the hole and pretty much tells me the same thing John just said! LOL!!! So I cut out the entire side of the hole and remove dirt and all, I hand it to Chris for a closer look and I told him to break it open, He looked at me and said really? I said yeah, you break it open, my hands are shaking to bad. I could've done it, but I wanted to let Chris share in the experience with me. anyway, to make a long story short, some a##hole either dropped, or purposely planted a gold plated California State quarter!! Now before anyone on here says didn't I get a quarter signal from it. the answer is yes, but seeing as how I had first pulled a pulltab out of the hole I just assumed there might have been something else nearby. Plus, once I saw gold, all reasoning went out the window. John looked at me and said I should have known it wasn't gold because of the signal I got, without missing a beat I told him John, I've never dug up a gold coin before so I how would I know it didn't come up right? LOL!!!! Plus, I have ran gold coins under my coil before, but they were in holders so I knew that the larger gold coins gave a real sweet silver half/dollar signal. I will say one thing in my defense, Up until the moment that Chris broke open the clod of dirt, I truly had the exhilaration of finding a gold coin. And I'm proud to say I had the discipline to stop digging as soon as I saw gold and I took some pics, and waited for my friends to come over and share the experience with me. I hope if I am ever lucky enough to really find a gold coin of any denomination I will have the same caution I used on this "Gold" coin. To be honest, I was bummed at first, but the more I thought about it I tried to just enjoy how good it felt when I was just staring at that beautiful gold down in the hole, and for a couple of minutes I really did have a gold coin.

    Been there, done that.....twice.

Once on the beach, another time out of a piece of furniture.

Funny how just a glimpse of gold sends the heart and mind racing.

    Cool find

Hey Batts, I said I know what it's like to dig one, I still don'y know what it's like to find one. LOL!!! I had the rush for maybe 2-3 minutes, maybe a bit longer. Awsome feeling!!! I will say one thing, it's makes you want to go out and dig all the low tones and look for more gold.

What a flippin' fooler! I've had plenty of silver coin pretenders in my plugs before, but never a goldie.

    Talk about a heartbreaker!

That's about as close as you can get without finding a gold coin.
I did get one of those gold plated quarters in my change from a McDonalds
in FL. once. Guess they're worth about $3
