Crab Orchard Park land mines????
Heard a story long ago, that in the Crab Orchard Park area there was a munitions factory during WW2, actually know that for a fact.....the story is......back in the 80's, a storm blew some old trees over in what had been the dump area for the factory, and hundreds of old land mines (unloaded) were found tangled up in the roots!!!! Anyone else hear of this? Anyone ever hunted that area?

If you are talking about crab crchard lake area of southern il., that is owned by general dynamics they still produce weapons down there so it would be heavily guarded by security, I have seen huge parking lot areas down there that would be great to hunt but it is off limits as far as I know, have not heard about the land mine story,,,, sounds like a good place to lose a leg!!!

Yeah, I don't know if it's true or not, could just be a rumor. My uncle lives in Johnston City, and we used to go boating and fishing on the lake there every summer. I can't remember if it was him who I heard the story from or not. I'll have to get in touch with him and see if he knows about it.

Re: Crab Orchard Park land mines????
From 1941 to 1945 the land was owned by the War Department, which apparently used it to manufacture explosives, according a study released in 1997 by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services. An intact land mine was discovered on the site during research in the mid-1990s, according to the study. Beth Kerley, contract compliance specialist at Crab Orchard, said a similar piece of live ammunition was discovered in the refuge in 2007.
