Daily "Hike" nets 2 hrs w/ CCFPP & Bomb Squad!

Well everyone, I came across something I never would've imagined around my neck of the woods. I revisited a spot where I came across a geocache last year to see if anyone had left anything in it or signed it. I didn't find the geocache, I think the good 'ole River took it away with the floods, but I did find something else. I took a picture of it with my phone, and went home and started researching some stuff on the internet about it. Had to run some errands, and on the way back home I couldn't stop thinking about it possibly being the real thing and some kid stumbling upon it and doing himself or others some serious harm, so I stopped by the local police station. They didn't want anything to do with it since it was in the CCFP, so they asked me to wait for him to come to the station. After arriving, he asked me to ride with him to take him to the spot. Upon arriving, he examined it, called his Commander and confirmed it was real. The bomb squad was called and we waited for them to come. After they arrived, the Bomb Squad "guy" asked me to lead the way..... :icon_scratch: I said, "Uhm, you want me to lead the way, I can point you in the direction where it is, and maybe I can walk behind you... :laughing7:" Well, we walked up to it, he examined it, picked it up, secured it and confirmed it's an authentic real live grenade. He said it will be X-rayed, put away in one of their bunkers, and eventually detonated in a safe place. So, I had quite the interesting day today. I'm glad I didn't kick it to check if it was real. ::) So I can sleep well tonight without this being on my mind. The authorities were quite thankful of my actions and reporting it. They hadn't seen anything like this in our area before, so when they got the call, they really didn't know what to expect.

Live - Wow :o

I picked up something that looked like that from a mil. surplus store, but it had been drilled out. That sure trumps the case of unfired 9 mm jhp's that I found in the woods today ...

Glad it got disposed of

:o :o :o :o :o Dude!!! It looks like the pin is missing from that thing!! YIKES!! It looks like a WWII era "pineapple" grenade. The little "squares" fragment into hundreds of razor sharp pieces of shrapnel upon detonation and are easily capable of turning a human being into something the consistency of hamburger meat!! Great job in reporting that nasty sucker!!

You mean to tell me you didn't want to take it to the casino tomorrow for show and tell?!?

Great Job Man!

Couldn't get much better unless there was a TV camera rolling nearby!

That's to close for comfort right there :o That was a coming home thing with vets disposing there war time things like that..I read a article a few years back where a fisherman reeled in a live grenade as well. That's good you didn't touch it as it had a little bit of the pin left in there.

the arming lever is held in place by a pin --normally to use it -- you grasp the entire thing squeezing the arming lever against the body of the granade-- you then pull the pin which arms it -- as you throw it a spring flips the lever away this starts the timing fuse -- when fuses time is up boom --there must have been just a touch of pin left to hold the lever in place -- that puppy was very dangerous -- a swift kick or mishanding could have been fatal -- be very careful around there -- dopers have been known to booby trap their dope growing areas (pot ) and dope making areas (meth labs) in the woods -- there might be a pot growing area or meth lab nearby where it was found

There was actually a good amount of the pin left. When the guy from the bomb squad came, he investigated it, picked it up making sure to hold the lever against the body, and taped it with electrical tape to avoid the lever from falling off before taking it back to his vehicle. Definitely a find I don't want to come across again, that's for sure. The first thing the CCFPP checked was to see if it was "hollowed out" and if there was a pin.

That's a little on the crazy side right there. Must have been a shock to see that.

Re: Daily "Hike" nets 2 hrs w/ CCFPP & Bomb Squad!

LOOKS LIKE A WW 2 ERA -- TYPE F- 1 (FRAGMENTATION) GRANADE --AKA AS A "PINEAPPLE" GRANADE -- USED TO CLEAR ROOMS , AND THROWN AT FOXHOLLES , MACHINE GUN NESTS AND INTO PILLBOXES -- AND MASSED TROOPS -- ITS A KILLER .

IT HAS A 30 METER WOUNDING BLAST RADIUS (ABOUT AS FAR AS YOU CAN THROW IT )--SO TO AVOID BEING HIT BY FRAGMENTS OF YOUR OWN GRANADE , ONE HAD TO TAKE COVER UPON THROWING IT -- THROWN INTO A ROOM WHATEVER WAS IN THE ROOM WAS TOAST .
