First hunt of 2012 - Months of research pay off with a half dime!
Happy 2012! So great to be hunting in January! I hope you enjoy the story.
I have been researching this specific location for the last 6 months or so and I just couldn't sit idle all winter not knowing if the place I found was virgin or not. I'm sure I am not alone to be excited for the weather this weekend! Took the chance to go far far away to "test" out the site. First 3 hours gave up 36 clad cents and we were talking about leaving for a backup site when we decided to try the one last corner of the area that we didn't hike to yet. Once we got there my buddy asked what I thought of the first signal... he had an explorer, and on my etrac it gave me a 1-47. I told him it sounded like a dollar or a half but I always get whole beer cans with that signal... he dug it and to our surprise a walker popped out!!! Holy cow we found the old picnic grounds finally!!! 10 minutes later I get a low tone but 12-47 target. I open the hole and out comes a 1919 buffalo. I rescan and now its a high tone 12-47. After probing i see the silver rim and get the no date SLQ which I now know is a 1917S. Third and last coin in the hole was a 1910 wheatie. A few more minutes pass and we are completely ecstatic at this point. The place we were at was in use from 1880's to 1950's so the next coin blew my mind. It was a 5-6 inch 12-41 signal and I was expecting a worn down wheat penny. I opened the hole and right away saw a small, dull looking rim. Since I was expecting a wheatie, I thought it was a washer or an o-ring from something. I am so glad I was carefull with it because when I picked off the dirt and saw the date I yelled SEATED!!! did a dance, and it went right in my water bottle to wash off. I was in complete shock to pull it out and see it was a half dime! In the last hour or so we pulled out an 1898 barber dime, 1900 IH, 1910 V nickel and a couple pieces of jewelry one of which has an eagle and an anchor on it. I can't wait to go back!
Thanks for reading and happy hunting!
