I think it would be fun to hear some of the stories out there. Hereā€™s mineā€¦

May of 1980. An extremely (unusually) hot day. Iā€™m pulling my squad car around to the garage and I pass our Director of Public Works, Tom, standing back there. I park and walk over to talk to him. I notice an older Gentleman with a metal detector working the grassy areas near a railroad overpass thatā€™s across the road from our complex. I laugh and make fun of him, something like: Look at that idiot ā€“ baking his brains out. Well, Tom almost whacks me! He says HE does that in HIS spare time and has been for several years. He then, more-or-less, ā€˜challengesā€™ me to try it. We were both off the next 2 days, so I agreed to meet him at a location in the neighboring town.

The next morning, we meet at this old, OLD Park. Tom tells me HEā€™S been mowing and clearingā€¦since this town doesnā€™t care about the property and told him to have fun if HE wants to take on the task. He sets me up with one of his machines - a Whiteā€™s 5000D ā€“ gives me the crash course, and off we go. About 3 feet off the path into the grass, I get my 1st hit. I call Tom over and he shows me how to pinpoint. About 3-4 inches down, I pull out a dirt-caked piece of metal about Ā½ inch square. Tom pours some water over it and gently rubs it clean. It turns out to be the base piece off an old ringā€¦not the band, but the flat piece that was soldered to it. EXCEPTā€¦this one is outlined with 14k rope and thereā€™s a small diamond embedded in its center!

Hook! Line!! Sinker!!! :laughing7:
ļŠ
I make Tom take me the very next day to his Dealer ā€“ 45 miles away ā€“ and buy the top-of-the-line unit (for that day)ā€¦A Whiteā€™s 6DB. Now, $350 was a sizeable outlay in 1980, and persuading my then-Wife Iā€™d make good use of this thing took SOME doingā€¦but she calmed down and I didnā€™t have to make another 90-mile round trip to return it.

The next weekend, Tom and I went to a 1950ā€™s-ish looking school in the town we worked in located along another of the State roads that ran through. Tom explained that locations along busy roads are usually pretty hunted out, but he thought weā€™d find some newer stuff and Iā€™d be able to get more comfortable with my new machine.

Comfortable? SH*T!!! Weā€™re not 5 feet off the edge of the parking lot and our pockets are FILLING! Nothing deeper than 5-6 inches and LOTS of pre-64 silver! Just Washingtons, Roosevelts and Mercsā€¦but LOTS of it (and jewelry, too)!! Totalā€¦Virginā€¦Ground. That first DAY ā€“ we each had over 50 coins and at LEAST 10 silvers each! Long story shortā€¦That place paid for my detector 10x over in less than a MONTH. Best hole: 7 Washingtons. Best find: A HUGE 14k wedding band weighing in at a hair under an ounce. Best Silver Day: 16.

Wellā€¦thatā€™s my story. Whatā€™s yours? 8-)

My Mom gave me her late husbands metal detector in 1985. It was a Garrett ADSII.. Went to some parks and on the 3rd time using it I found my first silver coin with it. A 1942 Walking Liberty Half Dollar.

I was hooked. That summer I found $425 in clad. Gold chain, Gold religious metal and a bunch of silver coins and silver rings.....

The spot where the 1/2 dollar was dug up is now a walking path right over the spot.....

Today common areas in Mexican cities are like that.

I had the orange Radio Shack thing as a kid...forgot about the hobby for about 30 years, then my bride bought me a bounty hunter for Christmas our first year in our house, (built in 1925), and was thrilled to get back into the hobby. Several years passed, then she allowed me to use the computer unsupervised (recovering porn addiction, still have urges)... anyways, looked at MD sites, found Tnet, got all jelly with all the treasure hunting going on...and here I am. It has consumed me to the point my wife wants me to actually find treasure.

Porn and specifically internet porn, has played a huge roll in establishing my current lifestyle. I woud never had lasted this long unscathed.

Oops! I forgot to add:

Turned out the Old Park used to be a HUGE campground that was VERY popular before WWII. It had closed down in either the very late 30's or early '40s and hadn't been touched since. Apparently the Village used "eminent domain" and took over the property with the intention of turning it into a Park...but the plans got shoved to the back burner. My friend had been doing research at the local Historical Society and found LOTSA photos from when the campground was in its heyday. Pays to do your research!!! He'd pulled over $10K worth of stuff out of there before taking me...including a REALLY nice 1873 CC Dime.

I got started out detecting in Grandmas yard with a Bounty Hunter BFO it did not go very deep. That yard barely had an inch of ground that wasn't dug, think all I ever found was a couple of IHP but I was hooked for life after that ! Best of all there was no complaints on the yards dug state :laughing7:

I love the stories. I got intrigued by watching a TV show called meteorite men. These guys were picking up meteorites with lots of money. I don't watch TV at all but this show had me hooked. My wife suggested getting a metal detector to go have fun with. My dad went out and got me a minelab xterra 305 for my birthday! My birthday is in November so you can imagine my frustration not being able to use it right away. Long story short, I haven't found much but trash with it and still haven't found a meteorite but I still love going out and hunting. Thanks for reading. Sorry it's a boring story. I like yours better Ogre.

Hi, Maiden. No story is ever boring...unless my Boss is telling it. What part of the State are you in? My partners and I always welcome company. And we're not secret squirrels about our spots, either.
