    Surprise dig last Sunday

I was getting one of those wheaties at about 6" and cut a plug about 4" across. When I popped it out this little fellow popped out with the plug and landed on my hand. This guy was all of 6" and half as thick as a child's pinky. But he was fiesty. These Dekays are common in Chicagoland but they are so small they're easy to miss.

I would have needed to change my shorts! Did you find anything in the hole or was it the snake?

No, there was a wheatie under the snake. I've found lots of these little guys digging around the FP's here and while they try to bite they're just too small to bite, let alone scare you.

Two years ago in McHenry I popped a wheatie out that was 7" deep and a toad was sitting on top of it in the plug. Starting to feel like a real critter gitter.
