Hi all,
I have used Garrett detectors since I started. There is a Craigslist posting for a used 1280x for $200. This looks like a good deal to me. Is there anything I need to look for with this detector? I currently have an AtPro and it works fine in the water at the beach I detect. What would be the advantages of having the 1280x over the AtPro? Will I be able to get good with it if I only use it a couple of times a year? Thanks for your help.

Hi Christo. Honestly that is my biggest question. No need to pursue it if it doesn't do water better than the AtPro. I won't ever use the 250 ft depth rating. Wading is as deep in the water as I go. I just saw this unit for what appears to be a good price and thought it might be worth it if it is better in salt water than my AtPro. Thanks for your help.

First off this is the wrong forum for Fisher Labs. J.W. Fisher only makes PI's.

To answer your question, the 1280 though older is way better in stability and depth than the AT Pro. True it does't have a meter but in the water you scoop every thing that isn't disc out. Great MD and won't leak even if you take up diving down t 250', though I have only had it down to 140 Ft.

I should clarify that the 1280 is a single frequency MD like the AT Pro and for saltwater it can false a little on some beaches. Beaches differ in the amount of salt and black sand concentrations so what is stable at one location might not be at another. Even given that, the 1280 has three knobs not push buttons. Volume, Sensitivity, and Disc. Can't be easier than that. Adjust the Disc to knock out hairpins, set Volume to where you like it for the Beep as it is silent search, and Sensitivity to where you like it. Best thing is it doesn't have a screen to lie to you. If it beeps, you scoop it up. 055.jpeg

That $200 is a great price. You can use it as a back up to the AT Pro as you will have to send the AT Pro in for repair sometime. I never had to have a Fisher Labs MD sent in for any repair.

I will back this statement up. I purchased my Fisher 1260X in 1984. I put this beast through one heck of a lot of punishment. The coil is on crooked now, but it still beat the heck out of the Ace 250 I purchased because I believed new technology had to trump that of a 29 year old detector - and the 1260X beat that Ace hands down, so I gave the Ace to my brother.

The old Fishers are beasts!

I can't speak for the 1280X, but because of the 1260X I'd call it a buy recommendation.

Also, to recuse myself, the 1260X was a land machine, not a deep sea diver...

My $0.02 worth....

I'd go for it!
I got a 1280X for $250 and I thought that was a steal. Paid for itself in the first three hunts.

Thanks Keppy.....I forgot about the lower frequency on the 1280 and why I was able to use it diving in saltwater.
