Old Mary Blue Road that ran through the African American community of Kansas. Walking in this direction, you reach the remnants of what was likely the old schoolhouse and then the Kansas Cemetery . Such a quiet and secluded place...if this place could only talk, the stories it could tell.

This is one of the few remaining remnants of the old African American community of "Kansas" in rural Lyon County, Kentucky. This community was founded by former slaves shortly after the Civil War and existed through most of the first half of the twentieth century. This was an old barn that was a very short walking distance from the Mary Blue Road, which ran through the community. It is located near the remains of the old house

This is also another of the few remnants of the African American community of "Kansas" in rural Lyon County, Kentucky. Kansas was founded by former slaves shortly after the Civil War and existed through most of the first half of the twentieth century. It is located a short walking distance away from the Kansas Cemetery on the old Mary Blue Road (which is named after a woman buried in the cemetery).

old cistern at the long abandoned and neglected building that was likely the "Kansas Colored School" in the African American community of "Kansas" in rural Lyon County, Kentucky. The school was in operation up until the 1940's when the black schools in Lyon County were consolidated.

Students at the Kansas School in the African American community of "Kansas" in Lyon County, Kentucky. I am not sure as to when this photograph was taken.

It has a feeling of the Natchez Trace. The road bed was worn several feet below the surrounding ground. Gives it a secluded, creepy feeling. Actually the Natchez Trace was. Lots of robbers waiting for hapless travelers. Still beautiful, though.

Gypsy,
You should see that road now, or correctly, you can't see it any more. Bull dozers and progress. Actually an a new access road to Broadbent Hams has obliterated that rustic lane.
