At the time Sam Houston was out campaigning for Texas not to succeed. It sounds as if the general populist didn't feel the same way. It sound as if the Stars and Stripes were hoisted down and the flag of Texas was put in its place instead. We know thru records that Sam Houston came to Marshall and gave a very powerful speech. After which Harrison county voted 59% not to succeed from the union. It seems that it was one of the places that voted so. I believe that it was a ploy so that Sam would not lose face. There was a large KGC presents in the county. Gen. Greer even Dr. Bickley were in Marshall at this time. Both left town to attend both the democratic national convention and the KGC national convention held two weeks apart. Less than 200 miles away from each other. There is more than meets the eye here. More than one reference to the KGC in the whole newspaper. Perhaps they thought that old Sam would be a useful tool after the succession. Knowing that the will of the people would be strong.

Remember that at the time Marshall was the third largest city in Texas and that during the war it was the headquarters of the Trans-Mississippi confederate government. Not only that but Marshall was a major manufacturing center during the war. Anything from hats and saddles to gun powder and munitions. Some 13 factories in and around Marshall at the time. After the war the gun powder and munitions stopped but there were other industries that sprung up. Even today they boast a ammunition factory. Did the KGC/O.A.K. ever end????????
