I don't follow kgc or jesse but because people do, I thought this might be of interest to you and also help out the person who was wondering about what she got when her uncle died. The letter apparently written by her grandad.
"
My uncle passed away a few years back and his wife sent us a box of his belongings. Has anyone heard of a man claiming to be Jesse James that could have possibly done this? My grandfather must have believed it was him. My grandfather had my mom at 63, so he was alive during that time."

What might I tell her? And for me, is any of this new info for the JJ researchers? Thank you kindly.

You can tell her the man referred to in this letter and photograph is William John James, a Jesse James Impostor and no relation to the Jesse and Frank James family. There is plenty of information about him on this forum and elsewhere online.

The short version and outcome of his impersonation was a legal proceeding where his sister, Los Angeles physician Dr. Bessie James Garver, came forward and signed an affidavit declaring him mentally unbalanced and a potential threat to society.

John James died in a Little Rock AR hospital for the mentally insane in 1947.

There is quite a lot of factual information about him in Ted P. Yeatman's book, Frank and Jesse James: The Story behind the Legend, and Philip W. Steele's excellent biography, The Many Faces of Jesse James.

Thank you ol' kentuck very much. I marveled at how your response is exactly what is suitable for a non researcher or non historian such as the niece. Perfect in form and content. I shall convey the info. Quite kind of you thanks again.

You're very welcome, Desertmoons. I always encourage folks to research tha Source of their information as much, if not more, than tha info itself. There is so much mis-info and dis-info out there on tha web that it makes it difficult to find tha Truth of these stories. Here is a link to an article I wrote regarding this subject matter and Historical Research, you might pass it along as well. Good luck and happy hunting to you both. :icon_thumright:

Kentuck is Very good at historical research. Your niece will be shocked I'm sure by some of things she finds on John James!
