Can anyone provide any map evidence that such a road existed? I understand there is the Rio Grand supply road that goes east from Ft. Wingate then south following the river to Ft. Craig, but it seems there is one (in the general story) that goes from Ft. Wingate through the malpais down to Pie Town and then on to Ft. Craig. Problem is.... I cannot find it's existence anywhere. Here is a screen shot of 1867 Military Topo map which is the best recorded map I think we have of roads and trails to and from forts in New Mexico and Arizona...
